Samsung leaks Galaxy S8 – Is a premium model in the works?

The Samsung Galaxy S8 hype train is running full steam ahead and rumors are coming in fast.

We already know some of the S8’s likely specifications, thanks to a number of timely “reveals.” First, was this series of Samsung AMOLED display ads, which showed an unnamed handset that suspiciously resembled what the Galaxy S8 is supposed to be.

Next were tweets from reputable leaker Evan Blass showing alleged images of an actual Galaxy S8 handset and confirms the presence of a headphone jack.

Now, Samsung may have inadvertently confirmed one of the top rumors floating around. An official Galaxy S8 support page on Samsung’s India website went online on Monday.

Currently, this support page is no longer available but it may have confirmed the existence of two Galaxy S8 versions, the regular Galaxy S8 and a larger Galaxy S8 Plus.

According to Forbes, the model number listed on the support page is SM-G955FD and pundits are convinced that this refers to the Galaxy S8 Plus.

With this “leak,” it’s more than likely that the new Samsung Galaxy S8 will come in 5-inch and 6-inch display versions.

What we know so far

So, stitching these leaks and rumors together here’s what we know so far:

Newer AMOLED screen technology might debut on the new Galaxy and the larger version may even have a higher resolution 4K display with astounding pixel density.

Other rumors also suggest that the S8 will also incorporate Samsung’s own version of the iPhone’s 3D Touch.

At least one of the S8 models is rumored to have an Exynos 8895 chip, a Mali-G71 GPU for even better graphical performance over the S7 and a whopping 6GB of RAM.

The bigger model may rock the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor and reports are saying that it may have an 8GB RAM upgrade. The 835 processor will be made with Samsung’s 10-nanometer technology, allowing for better power efficiency compared to its predecessor.

Camera-wise, the new smartphones will be similar to what was seen on the Note 7 – a 12MP rear camera and an 8MP front-facing camera. The rear camera will have optical image stabilization, a dual-LED flash and phase detection auto-focus.

The S8 may also retain the same elemental water and dust proofing rating of the S7 and S7 Edge at IP68.

Software wise, we may finally see the debut of Samsung’s own AI virtual assistant nicknamed Bixby. It may be powered by VIV (the same company who originally created Apple’s Siri), which was acquired by Samsung last year.

The new software may also include an update to Samsung’s S Health app that allows users to contact doctors via video chat, send photos and pay for medical appointments directly through it.

Another rumor points to a new feature called Samsung DeX, similar to Microsoft Continuum, that allows users to connect the S8 to a monitor via an optional HDMI dock for a large desktop version of Android.

Release Date

As we reported earlier, Samsung typically reveals their new Galaxy smartphones at the Mobile World Congress (to be held from February 27  to March 2 in Barcelona this year) but it is speculated that Samsung will be announcing the phones in its own Unpacked event in March.

This Unpacked event will be on March 29 in New York City.
