Recall alert! If you have this Apple product, you could get hurt

Summertime is vacation time. And of course, your smartphone is going along with you. If you plan on traveling abroad, don’t forget that foreign countries have different types of outlets. So you should make sure to get a wall plug adapter the will work in whatever country you are visiting.

When people plan foreign excursions, they sometimes visit more than one country.

If this is the case for you, you should buy an adapter kit with different kinds of adapters that will cover you around the world.

If you have an iPhone or other Apple product you’re taking with you, be careful about the adapter kit you may have already purchased from the company. One of its parts may have just been recalled.

Apple recalls wall plug adapters in World Travel Adapter Kit

Apple is recalling almost 900,000 three-prong AC wall plug adapters included in the Apple World Travel Adapter Kit because they pose a risk of electrical shock. The recall announcement is posted on the Federal Trade Commission’s (FCC) recall site.

Apple is recalling about 814,000 adapters sold in the U.S., as well as 81,000 sold in Canada. The recalled adapters were in World Adapter Kits sold before February 2015.

The kits contain three- and two-prong AC wall plug adapters that fit different electrical outlets worldwide. The adapters were made for use primarily in the U.K., Singapore and Hong Kong. They were also sold with Mac computers and iOS devices.

The three-prong adapters can break and expose the metal portion of the adapter, posing an electrical shock risk.

The recalled three-prong adapters are white and have no lettering on the inside slot where it attaches to an Apple power adapter. Redesigned adapters are white with gray on the inside portion that attaches to the power adapter.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled adapters and contact Apple for a free replacement adapter.

The Apple World Adapter Kit was sold in Apple stores and other home electronics stores nationwide, as well as online at, from January 2003 through January 2015. The kit cost about $30.

The kit is designed to work with iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Mac notebooks. It is compatible with Apple USB-C Power Adapters, MagSafe and MagSafe 2 Power Adapters, 10W and 12W USB Power Adapters and Portable Power Adapters.

The AC plugs included in the World Travel Adapter Kit support outlets in North America, Japan, China, the U.K., Continental Europe, Korea, Australia, Hong Kong, and Brazil.

This is not the first time that a part included in the World Travel Adapter Kit has been recalled.

In 2016, Apple recalled AC wall-plug adapters used with some Macs and iPads that were included in World Travel Adapter Kits sold between 2003 and 2015. The affected cords caused electric shocks in about 12 incidents over a dozen years. The products were sold outside the U.S.
