Remember when if you wanted to take high-quality photos you needed a bag of expensive equipment and maybe even some photography classes? That if you hoped to snap some pictures that could end up on your wall or even in a show you’d require something a tiny bit better than the little camera you could fit in your pocket?
Well, it certainly does not hurt to have top-notch photography equipment, as there is little doubt it will help you take amazing photos. But these days, you do not necessarily need all of that to get the shot.
No, all you need is a phone, and to help prove that point Apple, gave a new iPhone XS to a popular photographer. Their reason? To let him go to work and show off what the powerful smartphone could do.
Spoiler alert: It can take stunning photos
Apple gave the smartphone to Pete Souza. Formerly the White House photographer for President Obama, he has seen his profile continue to rise over the last couple of years with a very popular Instagram page.
He has more than 2 million followers on the social media site, so it is understandable why Apple would turn to him. The iPhone XS does not ship until Sept. 21, but your preorders are already being taken for the device that features dual 12MP cameras and Smart HDR that are buoyed by an A12 Bionic chip.
The dual camera lenses, which are on the back of the phone, offer f/1.8 wide-angle and f/2.4 telephoto, with a faster sensor, portrait mode (with depth control) and the ability to shoot video in 4K at up to 60 frames per second.
Additionally, the phone has a TrueDepth camera in the front with an f/2.2 wide-angle lens, portrait mode (with depth control) and ability to shoot video in 1080p HD at up to 60 frames per second.
Combine all that with someone with Souza’s experience as a photographer and eye for finding a great image, and you get a collection of photos that are a pleasure to browse through.
Fun Fact: Souza has a couple of NYT bestsellers in “Obama: An Intimate Portrait” and “The Rise of Barack Obama.” He has another book, “Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents,” due for release in mid-October.
