Netflix will stop working on millions of phones with next update

Netflix is the most popular online streaming service and has millions of subscribers worldwide. One reason it’s so popular is the ability to watch your favorite shows on the go.

However, if you’re using this type of smartphone, the Netflix app could stop working after installing the next update. The issue is caused by a common practice that millions of people do to their smartphones.

Why the Netflix app might stop working on your smartphone

There are millions of Android smartphone users in the U.S. Many of whom “root,” or “unlock” their device.

Rooting is a process that gives the user root access to the Android operating system code, it’s the same as “jailbreaking” for an iPhone. The process gives the user privileges to modify the gadgets’ software code or install other software that the manufacturer typically wouldn’t allow.

What’s happening now is, Netflix is releasing an update to its app that blocks it from being used on any gadget that has been rooted. The reason for the update is to prevent illegally pirated shows from being spread by criminals.

A Netflix spokesperson told Android Police, “With our latest 5.0 release, we now fully rely on the Widevine DRM provided by Google; therefore, many devices that are not Google-certified or have been altered will no longer work with our latest app and those users will no longer see the Netflix app in the Play Store. Version 5.0 only works with devices that are certified by Google and meet all Android requirements.”

This means if you rooted your Android phone, you won’t be able to use the Netflix app when the update goes into effect. The only way to use the app after the update would be to do a factory reset on your smartphone and leave its original settings in place.
