Netflix has some surprising competitors you need to know about

You’ve probably heard of the popular “cutting the cord” trend that’s sweeping the nation. This, of course, means that people are getting rid of their cable or satellite TV service and streaming shows online. It’s easy to do now that there are so many wonderful streaming sites available, with Netflix leading the way.

Over 45 million people in the U.S. use Netflix to stream movies and TV shows. But, a recent report revealed some surprising competitors that you may have overlooked. Is this enough to sway you from your ties to Netflix?

More people watch Netflix than any other streaming service according to a report from comScore. Out of all the homes that use streaming services, 75 percent use Netflix, followed by YouTube and the newer Amazon Instant Video comes in at third place.

Which streaming service beats Netflix in engaged time?

You might be surprised to find out that Sling TV users actually watch their streaming service for more hours during a single month than people who are watching Netflix. Users watch Sling TV for an average of 47 hours per month, while customers watch Netflix for an average of 28 hours.

Most likely this is due to the fact that Sling TV streams live television shows. So people who have “cut the cord” use the service for every aspect of their viewing needs and not just binge watching a TV series or movies.

Other streaming services that you might want to consider are:

  • YouTube
  • Twitch
  • Amazon Video
  • HBO Now
  • Hulu

Cable and satellite companies should probably be concerned over the popularity of streaming services. A recent study shows that 55 percent of teenagers in the U.S. don’t think there is a need to pay for cable or satellite subscriptions. In fact, both Netflix and YouTube are more popular with teens than cable TV.

With so many options out there, it is difficult to justify paying a hefty monthly cable bill. Click here to learn about some of the best streaming gadgets available. Who knows? You might just decide to make the switch yourself.
