Microsoft released its newest operating system, Windows 10, in the summer of 2015. The company made a huge push to try and get everyone to make the switch by giving the upgrade away for free.

Most people seem to be happy with performance improvements that came with the upgrade. But a recent bug was discovered that is causing major headaches for some.
What’s going on with Windows 10?
People who are running Windows 10 Pro have been complaining on social media and the Microsoft forum this week about a major problem. There appears to be a bug causing Windows 10 Pro licenses to deactivate, which downgrades their system to the Home edition.
Here’s what’s happening: A glitch within the Microsoft Windows activation service is causing the problem. People are seeing notifications that their license is not activated.
The notice looks like this:
The notice says, “We can’t activate Windows on this device because you don’t have a valid digital licence or product key. If you think you do have a valid licence or key, select Troubleshoot below.”
Some people who have run into this problem also say the troubleshooting option doesn’t work. Instead of fixing the problem, after Troubleshooting has completed, they are seeing another message from Microsoft.
It says, “We found a Windows 10 Home digital license for this device running Windows 10 Pro. To activate using this digital license, you need to install Windows 10 Home.”
Is there anything you can do now?
The tech giant has been notified of the problem and has been working to fix the problem. Well, there’s good news.
Microsoft Sr. Director Jeff Jones told BleepingComputer, “A limited number of customers experienced an activation issue that our engineers have now addressed. Affected customers will see resolution over the next 24 hours as the solution is applied automatically. In the meantime, they can continue to use Windows 10 Pro as usual.”
Also, according to people on Reddit, the Troubleshooter link in the original notice now works. So if you’re experiencing this issue, try the Troubleshoot option. If it doesn’t work, contact Microsoft.
