Hold on to your seats, people, these iPhone 8 rumors are marching in fast! We have been rounding up quite a few of these leaks for you these past few months and it looks like the hits will just keep on coming – edgeless and plastic curved screen, three different models, thinner bezels, wireless charging.
Yesterday, another leak emerged and this, yet again, confirms one of the top rumors circulating lately… and then some.
The scoop is that a Chinese social media user posted leaked manufacturing papers that showed three separate versions of the iPhone in 2017. These models appear to be the “s” models of the current iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and get this – a new, mystery, premium model internally codenamed “Ferrari.”
This reaffirms the popular rumor that Apple will be releasing three separate iPhone models in 2017.
Going by Apple’s customary upgrade cycle, the two “s” models will likely be just upgraded versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
The radical redesigns, then, might be exclusively reserved for the top-tier model “Ferrari.”
This premium “Ferrari” iPhone is expected to have all the whiz-bang changes that have been rumored so far: all-glass sandwich design, borderless and curved OLED plastic display, thin bezel, no home button and wireless charging.
The documents also suggest that the “Ferrari” iPhone will have a larger AMOLED display (a newer version of OLED display tech) and will be made to fit the form factor of the current models. This configuration will allow for an almost edge-to-edge screen experience.
Internal redesigns will also break the logic board of the “Ferrari” into two units connected by a flex cable. The first unit will house the expected “A11” system chip and the flash storage and the second unit will have the communications chips like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular.
The leaks likewise suggest that Apple might move the SIM card tray to the bottom of the 2017 iPhone to make more room for internal components. If you can recall, this is also one of the purported reasons why the headphone jack was removed from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
Another rumor that the name “Ferrari” implies is a new bright “Ferrari Red” color scheme that will join the existing iPhone color schemes – Black, Jet Black, Rose Gold, Silver, and Gold. This new red color is reportedly not just available for the premium “Ferrari” iPhone but for the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, as well.
Additionally, the documents reveal that the three 2017 models were designated as D20, D21 and D22 set for a 2017 release. Interestingly, if not confusingly, this year’s iPhone 7 Plus was also codenamed D20 during its development.
As for the reliability of the leak, the Weibo account who posted the documents is known for leaking information from Apple’s East Asian supply chain. These new emerging rumors are also in line with the leaks from reliable sources KGI Industries and Makotara, so it’s likely they are the real deal.
