iPhone 8 rumor – Long distance wireless charging is on its way!

Yesterday, we reported about the leaked documents showing the existence of a new premium 2017 iPhone codenamed Ferrari.

This high-end model is rumored to have all the radical changes planned for Apple’s smartphone line including an edgeless and plastic curved screen, a thinner bezel and wireless charging.

Now, a new rumor is emerging that this premium iPhone’s wireless charging feature will be even more impressive and revolutionary than anything we have seen.

In a leaked note from market analyst Louis Basenese obtained by Apple Insider, connections between the California-based startup Energous and Apple have emerged.

Energous is a company that specializes in long-distance wireless charging technology and is said to be working on technology that will enable wireless charging within 15 feet of the transmitter.

This technology is expected to be released in the last half of 2017, which will coincide with the unveiling of the 2017 iPhones.

The main evidence presented by the leaked note is the employment of Billy Manning as the Energous’ Director of Regulatory Operations in September. Manning was Apple’s Regulatory Certification Program Manager for seven years prior to his move to Energous.

During his time with Apple, Manning was responsible for regulatory certifications for the iPhone, the iPod and the iPad in major markets including China, the EU, and the U.S. His experience is expected to help Energous hurdle through regulatory hoops that the company has always had problems with.

Energous also announced a deal last week with Apple suppliers Dialog Semiconductor and Megatron for the development of hardware components, which gives more fuel to the rumor fire.

The long-distance wireless technology in development, dubbed WattUp, uses small antennas to transfer energy over fairly long distances of up to 15 feet. This is significantly farther than current inductive wireless charging solutions like Qi, which still requires a device to maintain close contact with a charging pad.

Energous’ WattUp technology will also be controlled by software and users can prioritize which devices will charge and even create charging schedules for multiple gadgets.

On the Apple side of things, the company is reportedly asking a select group of chip suppliers for wireless charging component samples and is working on radiative tech internally, as indicated by its current patent filings.

Aside from the AirPods, wireless charging, and long-distance wireless charging, it will definitely solve the problem caused by the absence of the 3.5 mm headphone jack from future iPhone models.

This will finally allow users to charge an iPhone while using Lightning port connected earphones without the use of dongles.
