You may have noticed, technology is always changing. In fact, the only thing constant in this digital age is change itself.
This trend becomes obvious when studies like Adobe’s recent mobile report become available. The study looked at more than 150 billion website visits and over 400 newly-launched apps and websites since 2015.
With this information, some interesting trends came to light, providing us with more insight on the way people consume TV shows and movies, and how they find their daily news content. And, what researchers found is going to surprise you – otherwise, we wouldn’t even be writing about it!
The mobile transformation
According to the report, M&E – or “Monitoring and Evaluation” sites – are seeing a 5-percent drop in web traffic year over year. Also, 50 percent of all visits to M&E sites in 2017 are coming from smartphone-generated traffic. The rise of mobile browsing is clear.
Apps becoming non-essential
You may think that apps are the way of the future, but the study shows otherwise. Based on the data, app usage is decreasing by 22 percent. And that’s just since January 2016.
One particular group of apps, however, did see an increase of use: banking and investment apps.
Beyond that, the report revealed that outside of key players like Facebook, Amazon and Google, consumers’ usage of apps is on the decline.
A rising source of traffic is now coming from Google Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP), with a whopping 84 percent of M&E websites seeing a boost in referrals.
Smartphones driving growth
One thing is clear: People love their smartphones. In fact, smartphones are now one of the leading sources of growth for web traffic and business – and they are the only device to show regular growth since 2015. Not laptops. Not tablets. Smartphones.
The impact of search and social
Along with the growing popularity of smartphones, social media platforms continue to be popular. There is also a significant uptick in the number of traffic sites that are seeing social media platforms accessed using smartphones.
Of all the social media platforms, Google and Facebook are the top dogs – controlling 77 percent of the visits from referred traffic. Other social media sites, such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, etc., combine for 23 percent.
Another interesting trend is that organic search, or SEO, is still the way to go when it comes to people finding your site. Nearly 77 percent of search efforts are the result of an organic search (aka, searching through Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.). That’s more than you’ll see from paid search efforts.
iOS still leading Android
Even with Android’s recent growth spurt, Apple continues to lead the way in terms of mobile search. Since quarter one of 2015, the vast majority of large companies reported a 26-percent rise in iOS traffic, as compared to a 10-percent rise from Android.
National news consumption on the rise
By now, you’re probably recognizing the major trend here: People love their mobile phones.
Another interesting observation was noted in the study, explaining news content is also rising in popularity on mobile devices. Overall, smartphone activity has increased by 59 percent, and national news sites saw an increase of 22 percent from mobile web traffic.
However, before you run too far with those particular numbers, it’s important to point out that the 2016 Presidential Election likely played a role in this increase.
Are people distracted while at work?
Bosses, listen up! The final trend that really stands out is something you’ll want to be aware of.
Have you noticed your employees checking their phones during the morning meeting, or even while at their desks? According to Adobe’s research, more than 50 percent of news consumption takes place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. – right smack dab in the middle of regular business hours!
Less than 5 percent of news is searched between the hours of 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., and the average time people are spending on these websites has increased from five minutes to six-and-a-half minutes.
What this means
