If you have this smartphone you could be in line for a payout

It’s been quite an up-and-down ride for Google this week, but it’s all blue skies for its customers. Google began the week by releasing its Pixel 3a phone and offering consumers many incentives to buy it.

By the end of the week, however, Google had settled a class-action lawsuit over its first-generation Pixel phones for more than $7 million.

Google settles suit over handsets’ microphone defect

It was announced that Google has settled a class-action lawsuit over defective microphones in its 2016 Google Pixel and Pixel XL.

Google will pay out $7.5 million to a group of customers who bought the defective phones. In some cases, customers who asked for a replacement phone received another defective handset.

The settlement was first reported by The Verge.

According to terms of the settlement, payouts will be split into four categories. A payment of $500 will be given to plaintiffs who returned their malfunctioning phones and received a defective replacement.

Plaintiffs who had a defective phone and did not try to replace it could get up to $350. Those who had to pay an insurance deductible to repair their phones could have its value repaid.

Finally, people who owned Pixel phones that had no defects at all will get $20. That’s pretty sweet for doing nothing at all.

Komando.com has reached out to Google about the settlement, but has yet to receive a comment.

Google will pay you to get its new 3a, 3a XL phones

Google started the month on a high note. It was touting all the money consumers could get for trading in their iPhones for Google’s Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL phones.

Both phones were introduced by Google earlier. The Pixel 3a costs $399, while the Pixel 3a XL retails at $479.

Depending on which iPhone model you trade in, its condition and your mobile provider, your savings could be considerable.

Google said it is taking $250 off the price of a 3a or 3a XL if consumers trade in an iPhone SE, 6 or 6S. If they trade in an iPhone XS Max, which retails at more than $1,000, consumers would get as much as $610.

At T-Mobile, you get $400 off the Pixel 3a — the actual cost of the phone — if you trade in an iPhone 7, iPhone 7+, iPhone 8, iPhone 8+, Samsung GS9 series, Note 8 and GS8 series.

The offer is also open to Samsung, Huawei, Motorola, LG and older models of Pixels.

Is the Pixel 3a worth the change? If you already own the top-of-the-line models Samsung and Apple have to offer, the answer is no. But if you are still using an older model of either phone, the trade-in deals could make a lot of sense.

Reviewers have been giving qualified praise to the 3a. The majority of reviewers said you get a good deal on a solid phone.

Compared to the Pixel 3, the 3a’s pricier cousin, the 3a has a slower processor, is not waterproof and does not offer a wireless charging feature. But it still offers some of the best cameras on any type of smartphone.

And depending on your trade-in, you could get it for free.
