Facebook has an amazingly large reach across the globe. That’s because there are approximately 2 billion monthly active users.
If you have a small business, it can be an invaluable resource to expand your client base. Unfortunately, that might change soon.
Will Facebook begin charging fees?
If you have a Facebook page for your business or group, the social media giant might make it more difficult for others to see them. That is, of course, unless you’re willing to pay to promote them.
Facebook is testing a new system that makes it harder for users to view publishers’ stories. The new system consists of two feeds. One main feed where users will see posts from their friends, family and groups that they “follow.”
The other is dubbed the “Explore Feed,” which was recently launched. This feed shows content from publishers and businesses that users are not “following.” The Explore Feed is intended for people to discover new things that they normally would not see.
Here’s a statement released by Facebook on the subject, “With all of the possible stories in each person’s feed, we always work to connect people with posts they find most meaningful. People have told us they want an easier way to see posts from friends and family, so we are testing two separate feeds, one as a dedicated space with posts from friends and family and another as a dedicated space for posts from Pages.
‘To understand if people like these two different spaces, we will test a few things, such as how people engage with videos and other types of posts. These tests will start in Sri Lanka, Bolivia, Slovakia, Serbia, Guatemala, and Cambodia. We have no current plans to roll this out globally.”
Regardless of Facebook having no plans for a global rollout, publishers and small business owners should be worried; many of whom rely on Facebook’s News Feed for distribution.
The Explore Feed isn’t easily found either. It’s buried on the left side of the web version’s sidebar.
As of now, this is only being tested in six countries, but who knows if it will go globally eventually? Another thing to worry about is potentially being charged to have your posts show up in the regular News Feed. We’ll have to keep our eyes open for more changes.
