How to fix Apple’s iPhone microphone issue

One of the more impressive things with iOS updates is this – they typically roll out en masse almost simultaneously. Unlike other operating systems (like Android), Apple pushes its updates to all supported devices as soon as they’re available. No fussing about with carriers or other third-party manufacturers.

We all know that keeping your gadget’s operating system is good defense against emerging security flaws. But aside from newer features, updates also come with patches that fix annoying bugs and flaws that mar the user experience.

Unfortunately, sometimes these updates can also bring their own set of issues. From buggy emojis to iPhone X Face ID issues, some of these bugs can be system breaking.

iOS 11.3 microphone issues

Apple has just confirmed that an issue affecting a number of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models running iOS 11.3.

MacRumors has obtained an internal document released to Apple Authorized Service Providers about an iOS 11.3 bug that’s causing problems with iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus microphones.

The document stated that iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus may get a grayed-out speaker button during calls. The bug could also prevent users from being heard during phone calls and FaceTime chats.

Although not a widespread issue, similar iOS 11.3 microphone issues have surfaced across other Apple forums and social media sites since the update came out a few months ago.

Apple hasn’t provided any explanation about the iOS 11.3 microphone bug but Apple did mention that some of the affected iPhones may require a repair. This is a bit scary since this suggests that the 11.3 update may be causing hardware failures.

Apple’s fix

If an iPhone’s speaker button remains inaccessible or grayed-out during a call, repair technicians are instructed to run audio diagnostics first.

Affected devices will then display a “device could not detect dock” or “accessory not supported” alert in the diagnostic pane. If this is the case, the technician can start the iPhone’s repair process.

If the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus in question is no longer covered by Apple’s warranty, the document states that the repair tech can request for an exception in this particular microphone issue.

For microphone and speaker issues, click on “iPhone“ >> “Repairs & Physical Damage” >> “Unable to hear through receivers or speakers.” From there, you’ll be able to “Send it in for Repair”, chat or Talk with Apple Support or schedule an appointment via “Bring In for Repair.”
