Kids are being introduced to technology at a much younger age than ever before. Over half of all children between the ages of 8 and 12 already have their own cellphone. Almost 40 percent of children younger than 2 years old have used a mobile device for entertainment.
But is their health being negatively affected by spending too much time on their gadget? Google has come up with a way for parents to keep track of their kids’ screen time to try and help prevent health problems.
How Google is helping parents monitor their kids
Many people fear that the growing number of children with smartphones will lead to health problems. More time spent plugged into their gadget means less time out doing physical activity.
Obesity isn’t the only health concern brought on by this phenomenon. Some doctors say that too much screen time can also lead to depression or anxiety.
In an effort to help alleviate this situation, Google has introduced a parental control app. It’s called Google Family Link.
The parental control app helps parents stay in the loop as their kids explore on their Android gadget. You just need to create a Google Account for your child that’s like your own. The app then helps you set certain digital ground rules for your family.
Here are some of the features Family Link provides:
- Manage the apps your children can use – You are able to approve or block any app that your child wants to download from the Google Play Store.
- Keep an eye on screen time – Monitor how much time your children spend on their favorite apps with weekly or monthly activity reports. You can set daily screen time limits to help avoid health issues.
- Set gadget bedtime – You’re able to remotely lock your child’s gadget when it’s time for bed, or time to take a break.

Both you and your child will need an Android gadget that runs the Nougat (7.0) or higher operating system. Kids need to be under 13 years old to use the app and be located in the U.S.
Spring is in the air and the weather is looking up. It’s a great time to get out there and enjoy some quality time with your kids.
