It’s incredibly frustrating when a brand new piece of technology does not work the way it is supposed to. It’s even worse when the tech wasn’t particularly cheap.
So, it stands to reason people who bought a MacBook Pro only to find that there were issues with its battery were probably not too pleased. Maybe it has not happened to yours, or perhaps you didn’t realize there was even a problem to begin with.
Regardless, Apple is trying to make things right, albeit quietly. If you purchased a MacBook Pro that was manufactured between October 2016 and October 2017, there is a chance you will want to take it in for service in the very near future.
You can get the battery replaced
At issue here is that certain MacBook Pros, the ones without the Touch Bar, have a component that may eventually fail. If and when it does, the built-in battery will begin to expand.
That’s not a good thing.
Apple says this is not a safety issue, but still, it needs to be corrected. With that in mind, they are offering people whose MacBooks may be defective a replacement battery for free.
Is my MacBook eligible?
As previously stated, affected computers were built between October 2016 and October 2017. Narrowing it down even more, Apple says only a limited number of MacBook Pros have the issue.
Eligibility for a battery replacement will be determined by the computer’s serial number. You can check that by clicking here. If your computer qualifies, then Apple will take care of it at no cost to you.
My computer qualifies, now what?
The first thing that will happen before any repairs are done is your computer will be examined to make sure it is eligible for the program and still in working condition. From there, service may take three to five days.
As for where it gets serviced, that’s up to you. Once determined that your MacBook Pro can get a new battery for free, you have a few different options to choose from.
Apple says one thing you could do is find an Apple authorized service provider to take the computer to. Another way to get yours fixed would be to make an appointment at an Apple retail store, though they may have to send your MacBook Pro out to a repair center.
The other thing you could do is mail your computer directly to an Apple repair center.
Regardless of which route you go, Apple warns that you will need to make sure any damage your computer may already have that will impair the battery replacement will need to be addressed. Furthermore, they say there may be some cases where there will be a cost associated with the repair.
Oh, and if your computer does qualify but you already spent money to replace the battery, Apple says you can contact them about a refund. Finally, this program is only good for five years after the first retail sale of the MacBook Pro.
