Forget the iPhone 8 – iPhone 9 rumors already spreading

Are you all excited for the iPhone 8 yet? The release date is still up in the air but we will definitely see Apple’s premium flagship phone this year.

While the iPhone 8 rumor train is still an ongoing maze of conflicting reports and it’s currently chugging along fine, news about another highly-anticipated smartphone are starting to sprout up. And this phone won’t even be out for more than a year!

A report from The Bell indicates that Samsung Electronics has recently signed a deal with Apple to supply them with 180 million OLED panels for a new iPhone set to launch next year. This new iPhone is speculated to be the iPhone 9. Yep, you read that right, the iPhone 9.

The report also stated that the OLED panels will come in two sizes – 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch variants, which suggests that an iPhone 9 Plus model will be offered. The final specifications are not confirmed yet, though.

“The two companies have recently signed a non-disclosure agreement on general conditions, including the screen size,” the report also stated. “Other details such as screen design and functions could be adjusted considering the phone is still under development.”

Judging by the leaked dimensions, the smaller “iPhone 9” will have a display size that’s slightly smaller than the current iPhone Plus line (5.5-inch) while the “iPhone 9 Plus” will sport Apple’s largest smartphone display yet. Although these dimensions can still change, the report suggests that the iPhone 9 line might retain the current generation’s form factors but with edge-to-edge screens and smaller bezels.

This also speaks volumes about Samsung Electronics production capacity since the company is already supplying 80 million OLED panels for the rumored premium iPhone 8.

Here’s a video of the alleged iPhone 8 dummy:

There’s a common agreement among pundits that we will see three separate iPhone models in 2017 – two “s” models of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and this premium “iPhone 8” that might rock all the rumored groundbreaking technologies –  a 5.8-inch borderless, curved OLED display, IP68 waterproofing, integrated virtual home button, 3D sensing front camera and display embedded fingerprint scanner.

As we reported earlier, what might really set apart the iPhone 8 OLED curved screen from other OLED panels is Apple’s use of hardware capable of new sensing technologies, including 3D Touch. The bad news is that all these wow-factor features could drive the iPhone 8’s price up to more than $1,000.
