Smartphones have changed our lives for the better, forever. It didn’t even take these handy gadgets that long to do so if you think about it.
Apple released its first iPhone just a little over a decade ago. Over that timeframe we’ve seen numerous phone makers come and go, and the landscape of the market has changed drastically.
As expected, Apple has stayed ahead of the game and continues to be a leading device manufacturer. Some of its Android competitors have not fared so well. Now, one of the most popular device makers from years past could be going out of business.
Have we seen the last of HTC?
Over the years, HTC built some of the most popular Android phones around. Some include the Google Nexus One, the HTC Dream, Google Pixel, and the HTC One.
Unfortunately for the company, those were released years ago. The popularity of HTC smartphones has been in decline recently.
Now, Samsung has become the number one manufacturer for Android phones. In fact, Samsung topped the smartphone market in 2017 with a market share of 22 percent.
The decline in sales has led to a huge change with HTC. The company recently announced it is cutting 1,500 jobs at its manufacturing facility in Taiwan. That’s nearly 25 percent of the entire company’s employees worldwide. The layoffs should be complete in a couple months.
The company said, “Today HTC announces [a] plan to optimize the manufacturing organizations in Taiwan. This plan will allow more effective and flexible resource management going forward.”
Cutting back its labor force is part of a larger company plan. It is going to focus more on its VR business moving forward.
With less emphasis on making quality smartphones, it might be a good idea to stay away from buying HTC gadgets. You’re better off sticking with brands that focus on manufacturing smartphones.
