The privacy of U.S. citizens has been all over the headlines lately. In case you missed it, we recently told you that WikiLeaks has released thousands of files showing how the CIA can hack into all of our gadgets.
Many of the documents detail vulnerabilities in gadgets such as smartphones and smart TVs. These vulnerabilities can be used to steal your credentials, or even turn your smart TV into a listening device so that your personal conversations can be recorded. With everything that is happening, Apple is trying to reassure its customers that its products are safe.
Apple’s response to CIA’s iOS hacks
Some of the documents released recently by WikiLeaks claim that the CIA is creating malware used to infect certain gadgets. The malware is used to control and collect data from Apple products that are running iOS.
Vulnerabilities found in the operating system are used to hack into the gadget. Apple released a statement saying many of the vulnerabilities in iOS were patched in its latest update. The company also said it’s working on fixes for flaws that have yet to be patched. Here is the full statement that was released:
“Apple is deeply committed to safeguarding our customers’ privacy and security. The technology built into today’s iPhone represents the best data security available to consumers, and we’re constantly working to keep it that way. Our products and software are designed to quickly get security updates into the hands of our customers, with nearly 80 percent of users running the latest version of our operating system.
“While our initial analysis indicates that many of the issues leaked today were already patched in the latest iOS, we will continue [to] work to rapidly address any identified vulnerabilities. We always urge customers to download the latest iOS to make sure they have the most recent security updates.”
Basically what Apple is saying is, you need to always have your gadget’s operating system up to date. This is a good practice to follow with all of your gadgets, no matter the manufacturer.
