Apps to keep your home in tip-top shape

“There’s no place like home.” It’s an iconic saying because it’s true. It’s where you hang your hat, relax, eat and sleep. That’s exactly why you’ve got to work hard to keep it feeling like home.

If you’re doing some maintenance, remodeling, or simply getting organized, we’ve come up with a list of three apps you should check out to help keep your home in great shape.

BrightNest is an app (and accompanying website) that is packed with tips, tricks and step-by-step instructions for crucial home upkeep. From small, efficiency-maximizing projects to important safety tasks, BrightNest has what you need to keep your house in tip-top shape.

All you need to do is download the app and give it details about your home. This includes if you have any children or pets, if you have a garage, basement or attic, and other little things. BrightNest will also ask for your ZIP code so it can use weather information to help personalize maintenance tips for you. Then the app will give you a personalized selection of catered tips, or you can browse through the daily selection, which includes fun projects to try, craft ideas, organization tips, and ways to make you and your home more healthy.

BrightNest also has a schedule you can follow. For example, June 26 is a day to clean out your refrigerator, while July 2 should be the day you start preparing for the garage sale. Or, if you so choose, you can create your own to-do list.

Every homeowner dreads coming home to the scene of a burglary. Whether you’ve gone on a two-week vacation or just a 15-minute errand, it could happen to anyone. What are you going to do about the items that were stolen? Or what if your home was flooded or destroyed by a fire? Most insurance companies won’t help you recover your valuables unless they’re on file.

If your valuables aren’t already listed with your insurance company, then you’ll be stuck paying to replace those things with your own money. The best thing to do is to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. Check out the Encircle: Home Inventory app. This comprehensive and easy-to-use app makes it a snap to catalog the valuables in your house.

To use Encircle, start from the outside of your house and work your way in by taking pictures of the exterior and inside of every room. Once you have the basics established, simply take pictures of the valuables in your house like your oven, refrigerator, major appliances, antiques, and, obviously, your tech gadgets.

Starting a home improvement project can be a big hassle. Finding the right tools and hiring the right contractor at the right price is all part of the song and dance that happens when trying to undergo a major renovation.

Now there’s an app that can help you through the process of sprucing up your home. With the Smith Home Improvement app, you can send pictures of your project with a brief description of what needs to be done to the most qualified contractors in your areas. This helpful app can assist you in finding the best plumbers, handymen, electricians, landscapers, carpenters, movers, maid services, roofers, painters, pest control, tree services and so much more.

Contractors connected with Smith Home Improvement will reply back to you with any questions about the project. Within 24 hours of sending in your project photos and answering any questions, you will be presented with the top three bids. You can then pick the best offer and book them through Smith Home Improvement. You’ll be able to save time and money searching for contractors since they’ll come to you. Once your project is all finished, you can rate the quality of the service provided so other people know who to hire.
