I don’t think librarians get enough credit; without them, your local library would be a disaster area. You would have a terrible time finding any of the books you are looking for, and that isn’t even the librarians’ entire job.
Likewise, if you have a ton of eBooks scattered across various gadgets, your electronic library could be a digital disaster area. EBooks can come in a bunch of formats and use obscure file names that can be hard to remember when you’re tracking down specific titles. You may be used to the default formatting of your digital library, but for big collections you need something easier to handle.
Trying to keep track of those eBooks using regular Windows folders is a pain, and not everyone has time to meticulously organize their library. Not to mention that tracking down a specific eBook in a digital library the size of Texas is no easy feat.
If only there was some way to organize them easier. Luckily for you, there’s a virtual librarian that can organize everything and help you find exactly what you want.
Make life easier and grab the free, simple program Calibre.
Calibre has a clean, user-friendly interface and a ton of helpful features to make organizing and updating your eBook library a snap. It is also very helpful for loading books onto your eReader; it can communicate with almost any make or model. You can click the picture of the computer on the home page to watch a very helpful video tutorial.
Even better, it converts your books to virtually any format. You can customize each book’s cover and data automatically by syncing with online booksellers.
You can even buy new eBooks straight from Calibre. This digital librarian compares prices from most of the major eBook sites, so you can be sure to get the best price on your favorite books.
To download the program, go to the Calibre download page using my blue download links below and click the “Download Calibre” button to get started. Select your operating system or the portable, USB version.
Note: Some security programs flag portable programs as potential viruses. Don’t worry, though; this program is safe.
The site will send you to your operating system’s download page. Click the operating system icon again and your download will begin immediately. When the download is complete, open and run the installation file.
Be sure to read the Terms and Conditions before you continue. Remember, you should always read the fine print before you download anything to your computer!
I recommend using the default installation settings. There is no additional software or bloatware to avoid.
When the installation is complete, Calibre will ask you to enter some information to help you tidy up your library. This will include the kind of eReader you use and an email address to send updates and eBooks to. You can skip these steps if you want by clicking “Next.”
If you want the updates but don’t want to give out your real email address, you can create a temporary account by clicking here.
Once your installation is complete, you can customize and organize your library to your heart’s content. Now finding that favorite novel is a breeze.
Note: Calibre cannot convert eBooks that use copy protection. That means it won’t work with some purchased eBooks or with eBooks you download from your local library.
