If you love to take photos, you've run into this problem. When you take pictures in low-light rooms or at nighttime, you lose almost all the details of the scene you're trying to capture. (See below.)
Try this. Take a picture of your kids with the sun setting behind them. You end up with a picture of a beautiful sunset and dark blotches where your kids are standing.
That's because of something called dynamic range, which is easier to capture using old film cameras than it is with digital cameras. Fortunately, the photo-editing software Luminance HDR can help. It is an open-source program designed for creating high dynamic range images.
Luminance HDR lets you create HDR files from a set of images of the same scene. Simply use shots taken at different exposure levels. Merge the photos to create an image with more depth and detail.
