3 Alexa skills to help you save money

The Alexa-enabled Amazon Echo family is arguably the most popular smart home appliance around. Anyone who owns these futuristic constant home companions appreciates the various skills Alexa can offer. Alexa answers your questions, keeps you updated with news, plays music, helps you organize your day, plays games, and even brightens your day with a joke or two.

With over 10,000 skills currently available for Alexa, there’s bound to be a skill that you’ll find extremely useful. Here are a few Alexa skills that can help you save money.

Alexa Daily Deals

One of the best money-saving perks of having an Alexa-enabled device in your home is something called “Amazon Alexa Deals.”

These are exclusive Amazon discounts for specific items that are applied if the product is purchased via Alexa voice shopping on Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show, Amazon Tap, Amazon Dash Wand with Alexa, Amazon Fire TV, or compatible Fire tablet device.

To check the available Alexa Deals, you can simply ask Alexa “What are your deals?” Alexa will then tell you about the best deals that are currently available along with the price and the discount you’ll get if you order through Alexa.

Alexa will then ask you to confirm if you want to purchase a specific Alexa deal and if you reply “Yes,” the order will be placed under your Amazon account. Note: To prevent unauthorized purchases through Alexa, please set up the four-digit purchasing PIN code via your Alexa app.

If you want to check what Alexa Deals are currently available, you can check them here on Amazon’s Alexa Deals Page. Keep in mind that even though they’re displayed on the site, you’ll still have to order via a supported Alexa device to get the discounts.

One helpful money-saving skill for frequent travelers is Kayak. With the Alexa’s Kayak skill enabled, you can track flights, explore destinations you can afford according to a specific budget and even get information about hotels and rental car services, all with your voice!

Kayak can’t book reservations yet but it is a great money-saving research tool for the travel deal hunter.

To enable Alexa’s Kayak skill, go to the Alexa’s Skills section and search for “Kayak.” Alternatively, you can just tell Alexa to “enable the Kayak skill.”

Note: To use the Kayak skill’s great features, you’ll need to link a Kayak account. You can create a Kayak account here.

Planning a trip? Skyscanner is another Alexa skill that can help you get the best flight prices and dates to help you save a few dollars here and there. Just enable the Skyscanner skill via the Alexa app’s Skills section to start exploring your options for your next trip.

Once the skill is enabled, try searching for flights by saying “Alexa, ask Skyscanner to get me a flight to Vancouver tomorrow,” for example. You can ask Alexa’s Skyscanner skill to suggest destinations if you’re itching to go somewhere.

Bonus: Uber

Did you know that you can hail an Uber car through Alexa?

Yep, just enable the Uber skill and you can tell Alexa to get a ride for you. Better yet, Alexa can tell you if there’s currently a surge price on your ride or not. Even though this is not really a discount if you use Alexa’s Uber skill, this can still definitely save you some cash (and a surge price trip) during specific times.
