Everyone who uses Medicare has probably realized one disappointing fact: It doesn't cover everything. But there's nothing worse than showing up for a test or doctor's appointment, only to discover the procedure won't be covered.

It's complicated. Medicare coverage depends on three things: Federal and state laws, national coverage decisions made by Medicare officials and local coverage decisions made by companies that process Medicare claims.

With all of these variables, wouldn't it be nice if you could find out what's covered before hand? Well, the good news is that Medicare.gov offers some helpful tools that make it easy.

If you're looking for something specific, such as a blood test, X-ray, scan or exam, the search tool at the top of Medicare.gov will find the answers you need.

Just type in the test, item or service you're interested in, and the site will pull up tons of information regarding what's covered.

Beyond that, Medicare.gov is also a great resource to find more specific information on Medicare Part A and Part B. You can also find information on the types of preventative screening services that are covered, as well as prescription drug coverage, and overall Medicare costs.

Whether you're considering signing up for Medicare yourself, or walking a parent or loved one through the process, the information found on Medicare.gov is incredibly helpful. There are step-by-step instructions and even detailed information on how to sign up for the Medicare plan that best suits your needs.
