You use a keyboard almost every day, writing papers, social media posts and emails. But just how savvy are you when it comes to typing?
Ever since the invention of the typewriter, the speed you type has been an important thing. It's a skill you can even brag about on a resume. But do you really know what your number is, or are you just making it up?
With the Typing Test site, now you can know for sure. The site was developed in the Netherlands by Juerd Waalboer to determine how many words an individual can type per minute. To do this, the tool lists commonly spoken words that you type. Once you begin typing, the program begins timing you. It stops the test automatically after a few minutes, then displays your results.
The hardest part about the test is that the words are not listed in sentence form. Instead, they're listed as a random sequence, which removes your ability to predict what the next word will be.
Not only does the test track your overall typing speed, it monitors your typing mistakes as well. If you slip up and type an incorrect letter, or leave a letter off completely, the word is flagged red and included in your results.
The average typing speed is between 190-200 characters per minute (65-75 words). On the site, there is a section that always displays the most recent score, and it's interesting to see the wide range. Click the blue link below to take the test, and see what your typing speed is.
