Kim's Opinion: Popular games being used by child predators

Millions of kids spend hundreds of hours playing online games like Fortnite, Minecraft or Roblox. They talk to their friends online as they play, and make new friends along the way.

But do you know the friends your kids are making?

A recent sting operation involving online games like these proves child pedophiles come from all walks of life.

This past week in New Jersey, 24 men were arrested as they tried to get kids and teens to meet them for sex using popular games like Fortnite, Minecraft and Roblox. The men used the game's chat to make friends with the kids to lure them to a house.

Among those arrested, there was a nurse, a firefighter, a security guard, and even a police sergeant.

What parents should do

No software fix is a replacement for good parenting. Know what the kids do when they play. Disable the game's chat. Teach your kids about internet predators. Tell the kids to tell you when something happens that makes them feel uncomfortable and use that word. It covers the gamut and you'll hear more than if you use the word "bad."
