Finding a Bluetooth speaker with a good balance of sound and portability is challenging. Ultimate Ears has a good option. This is our Product Review and Buyer’s Guide for the UE Boom 2.
The Boom 2 is similar in size and weight to the original Boom, making them nearly identical visually. The new model has a tighter mesh weave covering the speaker and the flaps covering the ports are flush to the speaker.
The speaker is fully waterproof, instead of splash proof, and also has redesigned drivers that make it louder than the first version. However, like most small Bluetooth speakers, higher volumes can still distort sound.
That being said, the sound quality you get from the Boom 2 is excellent. You get full sounds in the mid and low ends while not sacrificing on the high end. UE says the battery will last 15 hours. Controlling your music is done from your phone or by tapping the speaker itself.
And with the Android and iOS app you can pair two of the speakers together for stereo sound. From the app, you can also change the EQ settings on the speaker and push out firmware updates.
At $180, this speaker isn’t cheap. But the sound quality and functionality the speaker provides make it worth it. The extended Bluetooth range alone sets it apart from competitors.
There are less expensive alternatives that sound just as good, but most don’t offer 360-degree sound. Nor are they built for the outdoors like the Boom 2.
