Being able to hear is something a lot of us take for granted. Whether an alarm is going off in an emergency situation or someone behind you is calling your name, you can miss a lot when you can't hear what's going on.
Technology has brought us closer to solutions for the hearing impaired but they can be very expensive. Hearing aids cost a few thousand dollars and cochlear implants can cost as much as $100,000. If these aren't feasible options for you, check out the apps below. They may be a great alternative.
SoundAlert: If you're worried that someone might sneak up on you while you're sleeping, or just need an extra pair of "ears" listening for the doorbell to sound, an app called SoundAlert can help.
This app is designed to be used while your phone is plugged in and charging. You can adjust the level sensitivity on your phone's microphone and choose different alarms that will sound when certain noises occur. For example, if your sleeping partner starts snoring, an alarm will go off to wake them up.
SoundAlert also has a security feature that can be activated. This feature will trigger an alert if someone moves your phone. The developers are also working on a feature that will take a picture when your phone is moved, and send the image to your email account.
SoundAlert is a free download from Google Play. Click here for download details.
MyEardroid: The MyEardroid app uses your phone's microphone to analyze the sounds around you. It can detect the sound of doorbells, intercom pages, alarm clocks and phone calls. Once it detects one of those sounds, your phone uses text or vibrations to notify you. It works best in places where there's not a lot of background noise.
For right now, the app does need to be open to work, but in future versions, it will be able to run in the background. The developers also want input from people who download it so that they can build up the sound library. This is only the beta version and the developers want to figure out more uses for the app.
You can download this app from the Google Play store for free. Click here for more information and download details.
