If you're just starting out with Pokémon Go, you might be a little confused. There’s a lot to take in, but we’ve got five tips you need to know to master the game.
1. Save your battery
This first thing you need to know is that Pokémon Go is a battery killer. The app must be constantly running for you to play. If you want to catch Pokémon in augmented reality, turning the camera for that mode also drains the battery. To save your phone, activate battery saver in the game settings. Once it’s active, turn your phone upside down and the screen will go dark and display the Pokémon Go logo.
2. Move at slow speeds
The game is based on movement. The more places you go, the more Pokémon you’ll catch. Eventually you’ll catch Pokémon eggs that need to be hatched. But just getting in your car and driving will not hatch them. You need to be traveling at a low speed. So if you don’t want to walk, try skateboarding or riding your bike.
3. Reviving your Pokémon
There are several differences from traditional games. Battles are not turn based, and you don’t have to battle wild Pokémon to catch them. Additionally, there aren’t any Pokémon centers to heal injured fainted Pokémon. You’ll need to find Pokéstops to get items like potions and revives for your Pokémon, as well as additional Pokéballs.
4. Catching Pokémon
Catching Pokémon is harder than it looks. But with a well-timed throw and some spin on the ball, you’re chances increase. To throw your Pokéball, tap and hold on the Pokémon until the target reticule shrinks then flick your finger forward. To add some spin, just draw a little circle around the ball.
5. Finding hidden Pokémon
If you're having trouble finding certain types of Pokémon, look in their natural habitats. Water Pokémon will appear more frequently near bodies of water, whereas grass Pokémon will appear in wooded areas. That doesn’t mean you won’t find an Ekans near a shoreline, but it’s more likely to find one in a field of grass.
