Getting from Point A to Point B isn't always as easy as following the GPS directions from your phone on Google Maps. In fact, following the directions on your phone could make things more complicated, or worse, get you lost. Especially if you're walking, when you're riding a bike, or when it comes time to take the train, bus or trolley.
Before you head out on mass transit, you'll want an app like Urban Engines Maps on your phone.
With this new, potentially game-changing app, all you have to do is point your phone to see which way to go. It's called X-Ray mode and in it, maps are laid out on top of whatever your phone's camera sees, making sure you're always headed in the right direction. Pretty cool!
On top of that, you can see what buses or trains are closest to you, and you can also get the best public transit route to take, including different combination in mixed-mode trip planning. You can also create a stack of maps, with each map holding a saved, frequent location like home or the office for easy use.
Saving the best for last, you are also able to download an entire city's map database for offline use, meaning if you don't have service in the subway tunnel, you're still covered.
Note: Urban Engines is currently only available in select cities and for iOS gadgets. The app's coverage area is currently expanding, so check back later to see when your city is added.
