How to buy or sell hundreds of items locally

If you're looking to buy or sell something online, I'm guessing one of the first sites you turn to is eBay or Craigslist. And why wouldn't they be? Both have been at the forefront of online retailing, trading and auctioning for nearly two decades.

But these sites also have downsides. Craigslist isn't always the safest route to go, while eBay could be selling your private data. Not exactly what you want to sign up for when all you want to do is sell your stuff.

Luckily, there's a new app on the scene that acts similar to Craigslist and eBay in terms of selling things online. For example, let's say you're moving and need to sell your couch. Or conversely, let's say that you're moving and need to buy a new couch. All you need to do is download the OfferUp app from iDeal Technologies and you'll be in good hands.

With the OfferUp app, you can easily buy or sell your gently used items locally, ranging from furniture, bikes, cars, clothes, toys and appliances to video games, art, laptops, shoes, and just about anything else you can think of ... guitars, jewelry, pet accessories. You name it, you can probably find it.

If you're buying

Search for items using the search bar, or simply browse and find items near you. The app will ask to use your location data, but if you're uncomfortable doing so, you can just enter your ZIP code. When you find something you want, click on the "Buy" button to contact the seller, make an offer and work out the details.

You will need to create an account to do so, however. You can do this in one simple step by logging in with your Facebook credentials. Otherwise, information will need to be entered manually.

If you're selling

Take a photo of the item you want to sell, post it, and wait for someone to buy. Better yet, the whole process should take you as little as 30 seconds. Once someone has expressed interest in buying your item, you can check their reputation on the app and see if they are a serious buyer or a "flake."

Remember, meeting strangers online can be risky, even if you're using a trusted app like OfferUp. That's why the app's creators have an entire page on their website dedicated to helping you stay safe. Click here to see their safety tips when buying and selling your items online.
