New Facebook app alerts you to only news headlines you care about

Judging by the success of Facebook apps like Messenger, which has about 700 million users, it's a good guess that you'll soon have another of its new apps. This one delivers news in small bites.

It's a news app we told you about a few weeks ago when it was just a rumor. Now, Facebook has officially launched it, and it's starting to gain momentum.

Notify by Facebook is a standalone app for your smartphone. You choose channels, as Facebook calls them, from well-known sources like Bloomberg Business, CBS Sports, E!, MarketWatch, the New York Times and others.

These channels don't have all a site's news. For example, you can get news from channels such as the Daily AM Forecast from the Weather Channel, or Breaking News from CNN.

Each channel you choose sends you brief alerts to your smartphone's lock screen. The idea is that you can keep up to date with what's going on in the world, whether it's celebrity gossip, financial news, sports, or world news, simply by glancing over to your phone. (See video next page.)
