When you're exercising, getting an accurate heart rate is important. You don't want to do too little work and waste your time. On the other hand, overdoing it can cause health problems.

There has to be a happy medium and with technology getting more advanced every day, there are so many devices that will help you get in shape in the most accurate way.

Gone are the days where you have to depend on finding your pulse and counting the seconds on your watch to get a reading on your progress. Now you can just pull out your smartphone with the Instant Heart Rate app.

Instant Heart Rate uses your phone’s camera and flash to take a reading of your pulse. Just place your index finger on the camera and the app will automatically measure your heart rate by detecting color changes.

The app also collects data from each reading to create charts that help you monitor your heart rate over time. As a way to keep your various readings organized, you can add tags such as "Just woke up," "Before bed," "Exercising," and "Resting."

You don’t have to be a professional athlete or fitness enthusiast to benefit from this app. It’s also helpful if you have a medical condition such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes and need to monitor your heart rate closely.

A free basic version is available for both Apple and Android users. However, there is also a Pro version (Apple, $2.99/Android, $1.99) that’s ad-free and offers unlimited data tracking.
