Traffic is the absolute worst. Endless red lights, construction, accidents and gridlock on the highways are enough to drive anyone mad. Luckily, there's an app that can help you get out of these jams.
Acquired by Google in 2013 for $1.3 billion, the Waze app is a crowdsourced GPS navigation app that pulls data and information from other Waze users to show you where the worst traffic jams, crashes and other obstacles are. If you know where the accidents are, then you can successfully avoid them.
Now, most phones come with Google Maps built in, and Google Maps does have some of the same great features as Waze, such as real-time traffic reporting, but there's one thing that Google Maps doesn't have yet: the best voices to give you spoken turn-by-turn directions.
For example, you can currently get directions from C-3PO from Star Wars. In the past you could have celebrity voices like Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski, Neil Patrick Harris, Kevin Hart and even Elvis Presley give you spoken, turn-by-turn directions.
Not only does Waze recognize your favorite routes and automatically give you a traffic report, it also has a great feature that allows you to share your routes with other Waze users. You can easily keep track of friends, family members and new drivers by sharing your routes among your friends on Waze.
The Traffic Bar is also pretty cool. It's essentially a countdown of how long you'll be stuck in a traffic jam. Let's say you have three miles before your exit and it's bumper-to-bumper. The Traffic Bar will estimate how many minutes it will take to get out of it in real time, and count down as you go forward.
Low on gas? Waze can also tell you where the cheapest gas is near you, too.
Those are just a few of the reasons Google acquired Waze back in 2013 and has had Google Maps playing catch-up ever since.
