Selecting photo-editing software

Q. My digital camera came with photo-editing software. However, I’m looking for a more powerful program. Do you have any recommendations?
—Bill in Atlanta, listening on WBS 750 AM

A. Windows includes photo-editing tools. But, they won’t help you much with your photos. They’re good for rotating and resizing photos. That’s about it. (Macs feature iPhoto, which is much better for managing and editing photos.)

If you want to do more with your photos, you’ll really need a better program.

The gold standard in photo-editing software is Adobe Photoshop. You’ve undoubtedly heard the name. It is so well known that Photoshop is often used as a verb.

Photoshop is high-end software aimed at professionals and enthusiasts. You may be tempted to splurge on it.

But, Photoshop is overkill for the average user. In fact, I would discourage most from buying the software. First, you’ll spend $700 or more on the program. That’s more than many computers these days!

Second, the learning curve is steep. It is packed with all kinds of fancy features. You can use it to transform a photograph completely. Even professionals struggle to master it. So, you could quickly become discouraged with the program.
