Q. We will be heading to Florida soon. The house we are renting will have no Internet connection. I'm thinking about cellular broadband. But I don't want a contract. I only want to use it for the month we'll be in Florida. Is there some kind of prepaid cellular card I can use? —Howard in Dayton, OH, listening on WHIO 1290 AM
A. Broadband is worlds better than dialup. But dialup does have one distinct advantage: It's portable. You can take it anywhere you have a landline.
But you don't need to put up with dialup speeds. There are a few ways you can get broadband away from home.
Your best option may be to use wireless hotspots. There are free hotspots all over the country. You're sure to find one close by.
If you can't find a free hotspot, visit my site. I have some tools that will help you find free hotspots. You can also pay to use a hotspot, if need be. For example, you'll find for-pay Wi-Fi hotspots at Starbucks.
You'll need a Wi-Fi card for your laptop, of course. These days, Wi-Fi is standard on laptops. So, there's a good chance that you're ready to go.
If you need to buy a Wi-Fi card, you'll find them at electronics stores. Expect to pay $50 or less. I would go with an 802.11g model.
