Getting rid of Antivirus 2008

Q. I was on the Internet and got a pop-up for Antivirus 2008. It said I had 752 viruses and malware. They wanted $39.99 to fix them. I cancelled out of the box. Now, pop-ups for the program keep coming up. I cannot remove the program. What can I do now?

A. Suddenly, I am getting many questions about this program. It must have started a marketing blitz.

I assume this was a pop-up on the Internet. You apparently accepted the offer of a free scan. That's always dangerous.

I'm sure you realized that 752 viruses and other malware was ridiculous. I doubt your computer would have run if that were true.

This apparently is a false positives program. It "finds" the problems and offers to fix them. Even after you pay, it probably would find the problems.

I suggest you try System Restore first. This utility lets your computer step back in time. Windows system files revert to their earlier configuration.

To access System Restore, click Start>>All programs>> Accessories>>System Tools>>System Restore. Follow the wizard to pick a date before you became involved with Antivirus 2008.

Use real anti-spyware programs
