Must-read Internet Trends Report

A few years ago, I was honored to speak at Fortune Magazine's "Most Powerful 100 Women in America" conference. It was there that I met Mary Meeker. Mary is smart, driven and very successful. She is a partner at Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

Every year, she releases a report about the state of the Internet. The report provides tremendous insight for anyone who is keeping track of companies in a portfolio, running a business, changing careers or making investments.

I've outlined some key findings here for you. At the end of my summary, I've included her actual report in case you really want to dive in.

  • 2.4 billion people online - That's almost a third of the world's population. Our Web world is so much larger than anyone could imagine.
  • 1.1 billion smartphone owners - Almost half of that in U.S., China and Japan alone! That's up 42 percent over recent years. Pretty soon, everyone might have one.
  • That's only 20 percent of cellphone owners, though - Worldwide, there are 5 billion cellphones currently in use. Phones will soon outnumber people.
  • Almost one-third of U.S. citizens own tablets - The huge surge in affordable tablets like the Nexus 7 and apps that make tablets compete with laptops are making tablets the top must-have item.
  • Kids want iPads - You child or grandchild wants an iPad this Christmas more than any other gadget. In fact, almost 50 percent do. How many want a Microsoft Surface? It's like coal; only 6 percent want one.
  • Apps are huge cash cows - Mobile apps make up 67 percent of the money being exchanged on smartphones and tablets.
  • Smartphone shopping is real - Mobile gadgets make up 24 percent of the online retail, and that's increasing every year. I can show you some apps that will turn your gadget into the best shopping buddy you've ever had!
  • Landlines are out - Mobile phone usage surpasses landline usage by almost 400 percent.
  • Point-and-shoots, GPSs done, too - I called that last year, though. If you want to know what tech is on its way out this holiday season, check out this column.
  • Business are going mobile in a big way - From digital payments like Square to signing documents on tablets, smart businesses are replacing outdated technology with do-it-all mobile gadgets. Don't be left behind. Find the right tablet or smartphone to boost your business's sales.
  • Digital copies in, hard copies out - With streaming TV and cloud storage, physical media's days are numbered.

Now, take a few minutes and look at the entire report. It's really something!
