Q. Hi Kim. Some of my friends on Facebook are freaking out about Timeline. The new format doesn't seem so bad to me, but I don't really know enough about it yet. Since you're always after me to check and tweak my Facebook privacy settings, I'd figure you'd have some suggestions about Timeline. Thanks!

A. Thanks for the great question, Connor - and for listening to the show. This is a very timely topic because Facebook just made it possible to voluntarily upgrade to Timeline.

Timeline is essentially a digital scrapbook, organized by month and year in reverse chronological order. The tool makes it very easy for you and your friends to find older status updates, photos, videos and notes. It's voluntary now, but soon Timeline will become the default Facebook profile. That means if you don't take a proactive approach to shaping your Timeline now, Facebook will tell your life story for you - with everything you've posted since you joined the site.
