When you are running your own business, you wear a lot of hats. You’re the president, sales person, manager, office supply shopper, human resources, negotiator, scheduler and even the janitor.

One hat you need to take off is being your own I.T. person. I know, it's just the little things that you do here and there. Who has the time? This is a lesson I learned and also recently taught a good friend of mine, Chris. You see, he was so worried about keeping the business systems running and protected that he was going crazy.

As I explained to him, when you are configuring external hard drives and manually making sure that backups are done, you’re not making money. You need to automate as much as possible and this task is simply a no-brainer. And let’s not even get into all the problems of external hard drives -- they are prone to failure, theft and natural disasters. Remember, they are hard drives after all.

Maybe, like Chris, you think it’s hard to set up things to work properly when they are automated.  Maybe like Chris, you think you need to be in control of this task. Time to let go. Technology has made our small business lives easier so that we can also be more productive. Once you set this task up, you're done.

Automating is easier than you think, and I'm going to tell you how to do this with the most important I.T. job at your business.
