ON THE QT: Things I pass along just for you!

GET YOUR SOCIAL-NETWORKING QUESTIONS ANSWERED
I've noticed a growing trend in my inbox: I'm getting more and more questions about Facebook, Twitter and other social-networking sites. Interest in these sites is continuing to grow. They're rapidly replacing e-mail.

So, I've added a social-networking category to the Tips section of my Web site. I've also added a social-networking section to my Message Board. You'll find answers to your questions quickly!

You wouldn't believe how many questions I get each week. I do my best, but it just isn't possible to answer them all. That's why I started my Message Board. It's a great place to get help. Often, others answer the questions within an hour or so. Anyone can browse the Message Board. But you must be a member to post a question.

GOOGLE'S PROJECT 10^100 NEEDS YOUR VOTE
A year ago, Google launched Project 10^100 (that's 10 to the 100th). The idea behind the project is simple. Google wants to change the world by helping as many people as possible. So, it is committing $10 million to fund up to five projects.

The initial stage of the project is done. Google collected suggestions from the public in a variety of categories. Now, it is on the second stage. It is collecting votes. It wants you to select the ideas that will help the most.

Don't miss your chance to vote on your favorite idea! Head over to the project's site and cast your vote. Hurry, though—voting closes Thursday.

FINALLY! MICROSOFT RELEASES FREE ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE
Viruses and malware have been a problem for years. Fortunately, manufacturers were quick to step up with antivirus tools. But one company has been slow to offer protection: Microsoft.

Well, Microsoft has finally released its Security Essentials software. This free program will protect your computer in real time. It also updates automatically and can identify threats by behavior. That means it may catch threats that have yet to be defined. Want to give this program a try? Download it from my Security Center!

HOW MUCH RADIATION DOES YOUR PHONE EMIT?
There's been a lot of debate over cellular phones and radiation. A definitive link between cell phones and tumors has not been established. But some insist that these handy little gadgets pose a health danger.

New research shows that cell phones aren't created equal. Some emit more radiation than others. How does your phone rate? I have a handy site that will show you. You can look up your phone. Or, browse the best and worst phones by radiation level.

I guess the jury's still out on cell phones and cancer. In the meantime, I'll limit my exposure to radiation. I think that's a good idea for children, too.

GOOGLE GIVES YOU MORE CONTROL OVER SEARCH RESULTS
This past week, Google rolled out new options for searching. The Search Options feature was first introduced in May. Now, Google has added more options to help you refine your search results even further.

You can narrow your search results by date. For example, filter search results by hour and date. You can also opt to display more or fewer shopping sites. To access Google's Search Options feature, search Google as you normally would. Then, click “Show options” on the blue bar at the top of the results page. Your options will pop up in the left side of the window.

MY FAVORITE IPHONE APP OF THE WEEK
Book lovers will go wild for the free Stanza iPhone app. It gives you immediate access to tens of thousands of free e-books. You can download them from Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks and other sites.

Most of these books are in the public domain. So, you'll find plenty of classic works.

If you want to read a bestseller, you'll need to pay. Stanza connects to a number of e-bookstores. Books will be quickly delivered to your iPhone or iPod touch!

Will you strain your eyes reading a book on your Apple device? I doubt it. Stanza offers options for adjusting the layout of your e-books. For example, you can adjust font size and color to suit you. But it is quite easy to read via the application without adjustments!

GREAT, FREE PROGRAMS FOR ALL!
You've probably spend thousands of dollars on computers and gadgets. So, why spend your hard-earned money on software, too?

You don't have to! Just visit my Download of the Day site. Each day, you'll find a cool new program to make life a little easier. And don't forget to browse the archives. There are hundreds of quality programs awaiting you. Each is thoroughly tested and Kim approved!

Here are some of my favorite free downloads from the past week:

• Hulu is one of the best places to watch TV online. Now, you can watch shows and movies without a browser.
• There's a lot of information online. But not all of it is intelligible. This tool will help you do extra research.
• Most video games strive for better graphics. But what about a game centered on sound? Could be fun.
• What's going on inside your computer? It's a confusing, highly technical world. This tool will help you sort it out.

Saturday's Download of the Day—The Web is changing the way we watch television. You no longer have to stick with network schedules. Many shows are online. Watch them whenever you like. I'll tell you where to find the best programming.

Preview of Sunday's download—Buying the right gift isn't always easy. Wish lists help. This program helps you post wish lists online.

Want direct access to over 300 free and useful programs? Bookmark my Downloads page. Just go here and press Ctrl+D. That will add my downloads to your browser's favorites!

And remember this: If I say a program is free, it's FREE. There are sites on the Internet that sell free programs. There are also many ads on the Internet for similar programs, which aren't free. If somebody tries to charge you for a free program, back up. You've clicked on the wrong thing.

SHARE WITH A FRIEND: Help keep your family and friends in the know. Forward this newsletter to them now. Or, if you prefer, invite them to join us. In fact, we have a special place set up to do just that. Click now and share the power of knowledge.

DID YOU MISS ANY OF MY VIDEOS?
Need of a quick video fix? Then head over to my Video of the Day site. Each day, I select a new video to feature. These videos will inspire you, make you laugh or bring a tear to your eye. You'll love them as much as I do!

Here are my favorite videos from the past week:

• Take a walk in one of our National Parks. This video explores our natural wonders. Sit back and enjoy the sights!
• I thought I was lucky when I found a $5 bill. This man took one golf swing. He won $1 million. Now, that's a lucky day!
• The more I learn about animals, the more I find surprises. This is an example. Despite the odds, these are best friends.
• We can access vast amounts of information. How do we create, consume and use it all? The answers are surprising.

The world is full of fascinating stories. But some are too big to fit in a YouTube clip. These videos are longer than most. If you have some time, sit back and enjoy. See more in my Video of the Day archive:

• Kim Peek may have the most powerful mind in the world. His story is amazing. You'll enjoy finding out what makes him tick.
• Becoming a fighter pilot is not easy. Follow one pilot through his intense training. Suit up. Welcome to Red Flag!
• This video explores the top-secret world of the FBI. See how it solves crimes and tracks down terrorists. It's fascinating.
• Would you be willing to risk your life to study nature's most terrifying killer? Are you ready to see a “supertwister?”

videoSaturday's video—Scammers abound on the Web. And eBay is a popular hangout. Sadly, many of these people never get caught. But this scammer gets what she deserves.

Preview of Sunday's video—Dogs may be the most loyal animals on Earth. That's why we love them. But how far does that loyalty really go? This great story has the answer.

BE A PAL! SHARE MY VIDEO PICKS WITH YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS
On the lower left of the Video of the Day screen, there is a button. In fact, here's what the button looks like.

Click this button and you can share the video with family members, friends, co-workers and more.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY TIP: The cookie that won't go away
There are plenty of things more dangerous than cookies. In fact, most cookies do more good than harm. But some of them present a privacy concern. And the 2o7.net cookie is the perfect example. Learn more about it during the second hour of my show.

Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably a station near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.

STILL TO COME: Useful tips, important news and a few laughs!

• Finding software for your investment club
• Downloading my podcasts is a breeze

DIGITAL DIGRESSIONS: Tips that work for you!

FINDING SOFTWARE FOR YOUR INVESTMENT CLUB
Carol catches my Digital Minutes on WCBS 880 AM in New York. She is an assistant treasurer for an investment club. And she's looking for help.

There are at least a dozen members in Carol's club. The initial contribution is $1,000; members are required to invest an additional $50 per month.

Carol needs a program that will help her manage contributions and payouts. She is also going to need help with taxes.

Fortunately, financial software is available for investment clubs. I would start by looking at Manage Invest ($400). That's not cheap. But your club is handling a lot of money. Think of a quality program as a necessary investment.

It does more than help you manage contributions and withdrawals. You can analyze investments, print reports and manage your risk. You can assign assets to some or all investors. And you can try it for 30 days before you buy.

Others may also like this program. It will help with real estate, art and other investments.

If Manage Invest doesn't suit you, there are other solutions. You might try Club Accounting 3. It runs $220, but there is currently a $100 discount. Or, you can try Easy Accounting for Investment Clubs ($90).

Even if you're not in an investment club, you need help managing your finances. I have plenty of tools that will help. Don't miss these handy programs on my site:

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM IDENTITY THEFT THE EASY WAY
EK wrote from Harrisburg, PA, where he tunes in on WHP 580 AM. His sister's identity was stolen. It has taken a lot out of her financially and emotionally. So, he wants to protect himself. He wants to know what company I recommend to protect his identity.

Everyone needs to guard against identity theft. It's a growing problem that affects more and more Americans every year. Most people don't realize the strain it can put on your life. But you've seen what your sister has gone through. I'm happy that it has encouraged you to protect yourself.

There are many services that will help you protect your identity. Some of these companies use tactics that may not be entirely legal. In fact, I can think of one company that is facing legal troubles. So, I would choose a service run by a credit-reporting agency. After all, they have a lot of experience.

I personally use ProtectMyID.com, one of my advertisers. Experian owns the service. It monitors your credit daily through all three credit bureaus. It also offers a $1 million guarantee. It watches the Internet for misuse of your Social Security and credit card numbers. It will even help you should your wallet be lost or stolen. You can get a 30-day free trial by clicking here.

I have lots more information at my Identity Theft Protection Center. Then, learn about other ways to protect yourself. Check these tips on my site:

THERE ARE SOME EXCELLENT E-MAIL PROGRAMS
Rick wrote from Nashville, TN, where he listens on WWTN 99.7 FM. He's been using IncrediMail for years. These days, he isn't using many of the program's features, though.

So, he wants recommendations for a new e-mail program. He would like one that provides e-mail notifications.

IncrediMail lets you add backgrounds and animations to messages. And it provides pop-up notifications when you receive an e-mail message.

There are many programs that will help you manage your e-mail. For example, there are Outlook and Mozilla's free Firefox. These programs are much more buttoned-down than IncrediMail. They will both display notifications when you receive e-mail. And you can check your mail quickly and easily.

Both programs require setup. This is confusing if you're not sure how it's done. Fortunately, I have step-by-step instructions on my site.

You could also use Web mail. Some providers charge for checking e-mail from your desktop. Yahoo! is one such. But you might be able to get around that. I have a free program that should do the trick!

Another option is ePrompter. It's designed to be used with Web mail. It works with up to 16 accounts. When you receive a message on one, ePrompter displays a notification. You can also read your e-mail directly in ePrompter.

THE WEEKLY COLUMN:

STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR FAMILY ONLINE
Thanks to the Internet, it's easier than ever to connect with family.

Don't limit your communication to only e-mail. You can create your own family network, plan get-togethers and stay connected in emergencies. I have plenty of sites that will help.

Many families stay in contact via social-networking sites like Facebook. But they don't offer much privacy for family affairs. Luckily, there are better ways.

You can create a private networking site for your family. Post photos, leave notes and more. And you can prevent others from browsing through your family stuff.

A number of sites will help you create a family network.

There's nothing like communication to keep a family tight. The Internet makes it easier than ever. So read the rest of my column. It's free, on my site!

Do you have a Web site or blog? If you do, help support The Kim Komando Show! Linking to my site is easy. Plus, I just added new artwork to post on your page. You'll find instructions and the artwork here. Thank you for your support!

A LITTLE ABOUT ME:
Did you know that I host two national radio shows? I have a Digital Minute that airs Monday through Friday. I also host a three-hour show on the weekends. Over 460 radio stations in the great United States broadcast my shows. Plus, from here in the desert come all kinds of tidbits about living a digital lifestyle. You can read my weekly column in over 100 Gannett newspapers across the country. And I write two columns a week for the USAToday Web site.

HAVE A QUESTION? CALL ME THIS WEEKEND!
If you have a question about something digital, let me help! It takes just three easy steps: 1.) Call the LIVE broadcast. That's this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the East Coast, or, if you live on the West Coast, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. 2.) Know the phone number. It is, of course, toll-free 1-888-825-5254. 3.) Talk to me. That's all there is to it!

COOL USEFUL FUN FREEBIE OF THE WEEK

THIS WEEK'S FOCUS: Find your favorite TV shows online
The Web is changing the way we watch television. You no longer have to stick with network schedules. Many shows are online. Watch them whenever you like. I'll tell you where to find the best programming.

Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably one near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.

• SECURE COMPUTING: URLzone a scary new Trojan

SECURE COMPUTING: STUFF TO KEEP YOU SAFE FROM HARM!

Brought to you by my book, Complete Guide to Computer Security & Privacy. Order your copy today!

TROJAN STEALS MONEY FROM UNDER YOUR NOSE
Researchers say URLzone Trojan marks a new generation of bank Trojans. It has features designed to stymie banks' fraud detection tools. URLzone can be set to steal money in small increments over time. This will raise fewer red flags than one large transfer. And it will make sure that your account balance never dips below zero.

Also, URLzone steals money while you're logged in to your bank's site. It alters the page you see. That means you won't realize that money is being stolen from your account. The Trojan can get on your machine a number of ways. For example, it could arrive via PDF file or malicious JavaScript. URLzone exploits holes in Firefox, IE and Opera.

How can you avoid this nasty Trojan? Keep your security software current. If you don't have security programs, go to my Security Center now. I have all the free tools you need. Watch the sites you visit, and don't open unanticipated e-mail attachments.

And run Secunia's free Personal Software Inspector. It will tell you if your browser needs updating.

THE END IS IN SIGHT, BUT I WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK

KILLER TIP--THE WEEKLY QUESTION SENT IN FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU!

I plan to upgrade my computer to Windows 7. I'm particularly excited about recording television shows. Goodbye monthly TiVo bill! How will the TV recording feature work? Also, will my older programs run under Windows 7? Or, will I have to replace them?
Linda in Atlanta, listening on WSB 750 AM

Windows 7 will be out on Oct. 22. Many people are eagerly awaiting Microsoft's latest operating system.

So far, it's getting positive reviews. It fixes many of Vista's problems. For example, User Account Control is less intrusive. And you can tweak it fairly easily.

There are also improvements in speed and performance. And Windows 7 includes a bunch of cool new features.

So, will your old programs work? Go to my site. I'll help you check them for compatibility, along with your hardware. I'll also get you up to speed on Windows 7's TV recording feature. You'll even learn about a special deal for students!

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU LAUGH

IT'S ALL IN THE ACCENT
A pedestrian sees a man sitting beside a car. The man is obviously unhappy. In a Boston accent, the pedestrian asks what is wrong. "I've locked my keys and cell phone in the car," the man replies. Says the pedestrian, "Is that all? I can open your car." The pedestrian rubs one of his pant legs on the car door. The lock pops up. "Wow!" says the car owner. "How did you do that?" "Easy," he says. "I'm wearing khaki pants."
