MY FAVORITE FREE MOVIE EDITOR GOT BETTER
It's hard to believe, but Windows 7 will be here in less than two months. The actual date is October 22. And here's something you might not know: Microsoft has removed several programs. For example, Windows 7 will not include Movie Maker. But don't stress. Microsoft is putting these programs online for free download. That way, it says, they can be updated more frequently.
To get things started, Microsoft has released an updated version of Windows Movie Maker. (It's now called Windows Live Movie Maker.) You'll find new transitions and effects. And sharing your videos is easier than ever. You can send them to YouTube. Or, download a plug-in and upload them to Facebook. More plug-ins for sharing sites are on the way.
You needn't wait for Windows 7 to get the new Movie Maker. Download it now! It works with both Windows XP and Vista. Click here to get your copy through my site.
PROTECT YOURSELF WITH MY IDENTITY THEFT CENTER
Few weeks seem to pass without a news story about identity theft. Yet, many people still don't know the facts about this crime. Nor do they fully protect themselves. Maybe you've purchased some type of identity theft protection that isn't the best. That's a huge risk to take!
I've done the research and found the best ID theft protection solutions. It's all in Kim's Identity Theft Protection Center. Here, you can learn more about this problem. You'll also learn about practical ways to protect yourself from thieves. Don't wait another day to protect your finances and your name!
Click here now to learn more about the best ways to protect your identity.
WAL-MART RECALLS 4.2 MILLION DVD PLAYERS
Wal-Mart recently issued a recall for its Durabrand DVD player. The initial recall affected silver models. But now, Wal-Mart has expanded the recall to include color models. In all, 4.2 million units were sold between January 2006 and July 2009.
There have been 14 reports of the players overheating. Half of the cases ended in fires that caused property damage. If you own a Duraband DVD player, check Wal-Mart's site to see if it is affected. You should stop using the players and unplug them immediately.
WITH THIS KIT, YOU CAN LOOK NORMAL
I feel sorry for those whose desks aren't graced by children's pictures. What lonely lives they must lead!
Imagine. They miss the visits to the emergency room. They don't hear the loudmouths at the Little League games. They don't get to sleep in uncomfortable tents during Scout camping trips. Yes, parenting should not be missed!
The ultimate, of course, is the sick kid routine. "My child has the flu. I have to stay home with him." Uh-huh.
Well, salvation has arrived for the childless. It's the Office Kid kit. For $19.95, you get a child's picture (pick the ethnicity) and art. Just put them on your desk. According to the site, you're ready to take time off.
Note to my employees: Don't even THINK about this. I'm on to you!
I'm sure (hope?) this site is tongue in cheek. If you try to use it and get caught, don't blame me!
BACK TO SCHOOL GIVEAWAY IS OVER; WHO WON?

I'VE GOT PLENTY OF GREAT FREEBIES
The Internet is a great place to find free software. But you have to worry about viruses, Trojans and other threats. You never know where you're going to find malware.
I can tell you where you won't find malware: my Downloads section! It features hundreds of programs that will make your life easier. Each has been checked thoroughly for malware. You have nothing to worry about!
Here are some of my favorite free downloads from the past week:
Saturday's Download of the Day—Many people are looking for a job. That can be really hard today. But extra knowledge and effort can go a long way. I have tips that can really make a difference.
Preview of Sunday's download—LEGOs are just cool. So, what if you could design your own LEGO sets? Actually, you can.
Want direct access to over 300 free programs? Bookmark my Downloads page. Just go here and press Ctrl+D. That will add my downloads to your browser's favorites!
And remember this: If I say a program is free, it's FREE. There are sites on the Internet that sell free programs. There are also many ads on the Internet for similar programs, which aren't free. If somebody tries to charge you for a free program, back up. You've clicked on the wrong thing.
SHARE WITH A FRIEND: Help keep your family and friends in the know. Forward this newsletter to them now. Or, if you prefer, invite them to join us. In fact, we have a special place set up to do just that. Click now and share the power of knowledge.
FAVORITE IPHONE APP OF THE WEEK
The digital landscape is constantly changing. We've gone from desktop computer to laptops. Now, cell phones are poised to take over. Leading the pack is Apple's iPhone.
So, each week I will bring you an iPhone app. It will add new features to your iPhone. The apps may be surprising or unexpected. But that's one of the exciting things about technology: You never know what someone's going to come up with next!
I'll start you off with three of my favorite iPhone apps. All are free:
Shazam
Want to buy a song you heard in a movie or on TV? One of your biggest obstacles will be identifying the song. You could try doing a search online using lyrics. But that is hit or miss. Shazam is a better option.
Open the program and hold your phone up to the music source. Then, click Tag. Shazam will identify the song for you. It will even link to iTunes so you can buy it. It also links to related videos on YouTube. And it lets you share music with friends. Shazam's a must for any music lover.
SnapTell
Image recognition technology is amazing. It can help identify known terrorists and other criminals. Or, if you have SnapTell on your phone, you can use it for shopping! Just snap a picture of a book, video game, CD or DVD.
SnapTell will provide more information on the title. It will also help you compare prices on eBay, Barnes & Noble and elsewhere! It's an easy way to comparison shop at a store. The developer plans to expand support for more types of items.
reMovem
Often, the simplest games are the most enjoyable. You don't have to learn complicated instructions and controls to play them. You can just fire them up and get started. Such is the case with reMovem.
You're presented with a grid of colored balls. The object is to clear the screen. Tap on two or more balls of the same color. The more balls you clear at once, the more points you score. reMovem even features a color-blind mode. So, those with color blindness can enjoy this game!
NEW! Do you have a favorite iPhone app? I've set up a special section on our Komando.com Message Board for you to share your gems. Simply click here to access the Message Board. Reminder: Anyone can read the Message Board. You have to be a Kim's Club member to post. Click here to join now.
BEHOLD MY DAILY VIDEO GEMS Lots of sites feature videos. But do you really want to take your chances? Many videos feature swearing, drug use or other offensive content. They're definitely not for kids.
That's why I started my Video of the Day. Each day, I choose one video you're sure to love. You won't find anything offensive here—just good clean fun.
Here are my favorite videos from the past week:
• Talent shows are all the rage. Most acts are bizarre. But occasionally, you find a great one.
• Soon, we'll have wireless electricity. You'll never have to plug anything in. Today's video shows you how it works. Amazing!
• Films use special effects to show things that don't exist. They have probably stunned you. Look back at how it was done.
• Men and women process information differently. That often leads to hilarious miscommunication. Just ask this comedian.
The news can sometimes be a downer. There are a lot of troubling things to report on. But there are fascinating stories, too. I have many in my Video of the Day archive. These are some of my favorites:
• Being blind changes how you approach the world. But you can still have wild adventures. Just watch these blind students.
• People throughout history have fought for their rights. But one fight won't make history. Do you have the "right to dry?"
• Church is a staple for millions. But this one is different. Its members never leave their cars. It's a drive-in church.
• All work and no play stinks. But what about no work at all? Well, you'd be a slacker. But you'd be in good company.
Saturday's video—Few names are instantly recognizable anywhere in the world. Johnnie Walker is one. This is the true story behind the famous whiskey.
Preview of Sunday's video—Many brave men and women continue to fight overseas. Their deaths are heavy blows to friends and family. But the public often misses their sacrifice.
BE A PAL! SHARE MY VIDEO PICKS WITH YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS
On the lower left of the Video of the Day screen, there is a button. In fact, here's what the button looks like.
Click this button and you can share the video with family members, friends, coworkers and more.
PRIVACY AND SECURITY TIP: Track kids or adults with tech
GPS leads you to your destination. But it can also track friends and family. A number of devices have GPS tracking built-in. That includes many cell phones. All you need are the right tools. I'll give you the details in the second hour of my show.
Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably a station near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.
STILL TO COME: Useful tips, important news and a few laughs!
• Finding a wireless spycam
• Converting a Works document to Word format
• Track down your stolen iPhone
• Important security tips; and some awesome freebies! Back to the top

WATCHING AN ELDERLY PARENT WITH A SPYCAM
Elizabeth wrote from Buena Vista, CO, where she tunes in on KVRH 1340 AM. Her mother is in a nursing home a few hours away. Elizabeth wants to make sure her mother is treated well. She's looking for a discreet spycam that will transmit to her laptop.
Elizabeth, you will find plenty of spycams online. These are hidden in alarm clocks, CD players and other electronics. Most of these will record to a memory card. You can learn all about the latest in spy tech in my entertaining column.
You may find spycams that connect wirelessly to a network. Or, you can use a wireless security camera for the purpose. However, you would need to find some way to conceal the camera.
None of these solutions is ideal for your situation. You want to see the video immediately. That excludes spycams that record to memory card. The wireless security cameras require a Wi-Fi network.
You might check for Wi-Fi at the home using your laptop. Remember that the network must be unsecured. Otherwise, you'll need a password to add your Webcam.
You may be able to find a Webcam with a cellular connection. Some are mentioned online. However, most seem to be discontinued or unavailable in the United States.
The ones I did find are expensive. For example, there's Colorado Video's Observer IV. It sells for $1,900. There's also the SmartScouter Surveillance System ($600). It is intended for hunters. Neither of these cameras are discreet. And you'd have to pay a monthly subscription.
Finally, I received a similar question awhile back. I discussed ways to report suspicions of nursing home abuse. A spycam can help protect your mother. But it isn't a fail-safe solution.
SHOULD YOU HACK YOUR SMARTPHONE'S SOFTWARE?
Mike in Boston tunes in on WBZ 1030 AM. He wants to remove the NASCAR app from his Palm Pre. He found a hack that will let him do it. He wants to know if he should use it.
I also received a message from Ben. He listens on KDWN 720 AM, Las Vegas. He wants my thoughts on jailbreaking the iPhone.
These questions are related. So, I'll answer them together.
Let's start by talking a little bit about the Palm Pre. You can download and install apps. And you can delete the apps when you tire of them. However, pre-installed apps like NASCAR can't be removed easily.
To remove them, you need to "root" the phone. This will give you access to the root directory. You can then change the software. I assume this is the hack you found online, Mike.
Rooting a Pre is much like jailbreaking an iPhone. Jailbreaking lets you install unauthorized software. For example, there's a program that lets you record video on early iPhones. You can also unlock your iPhone to run on different carriers.
I strongly recommend against rooting, jailbreaking or unlocking your phone. These are expensive electronics. Hacking into the software will void your warranty, or worse.

HOW MANY PODCASTS CAN YOU FIT ON AN MP3 PLAYER?
Thomas wrote from Edinburg, TX, where he tunes in on KURV 710 AM. He's also a member of Kim's Club. He would like some help selecting an MP3 player. He will use it primarily for listening to my podcasts. He wants to know how many gigabytes he needs to download and listen to both my weekend national show and daily digital minutes.
The downloaded show files aren't very big, Thomas. The weekend show is roughly 40 megabytes; there are 1,000 megabytes in a gigabyte. That means you'll get about 25 shows per gigabyte of storage. That's about 6 months worth of shows in 1 GB!
The Minutes are even smaller. They're about 400 kilobytes. There are 100,000 kilobytes in a gigabyte. So, one gigabyte of storage will hold about 2,500 Minutes. That's a lot of digital minutes!
A 1 GB MP3 player sells for under $20. That's all you need. But if you think you'll be listening to music too, bump it up to 4 GB. These run around $30.
Also, an MP3 player isn't required to listen to my shows. You can use your computer. Or, you can burn them to a CD. This is handy for the car. But an MP3 player works well when you're on the go.
Each week, I get tons of questions about MP3 players. If you have a question, I may have already answered it. Check my audio and music tips to find out! And, if you're looking for free music, audiobooks and more, check out my downloads.

8 TIPS FOR NEW MAC USERS
You just bought a shiny new Mac. If you're like most former Windows users, your first thought is, "Now what?" Fortunately, a Mac is easy to use. Windows folks tend to over think how to do things on a Mac.
Starting with the keyboard, the Mac's looks different. The Apple/Command key replaces the Windows key. But it works like the Control key on Windows machines. You'll use it with shortcuts.
Incidentally, many shortcuts are similar to those in Windows. Just use the Command key in place of Control. For example, use Cmd-C to copy, Cmd-V to paste and Cmd-X to cut. Shift-Cmd-A opens the Applications folder. Option-Cmd-M minimizes all windows. Press the Command key as you drag an item to a different folder to move it.
Got a new Mac? My column can help you get up and running. It's free, on my site!Do you have a Web site or blog? If you do, help support The Kim Komando Show! Linking to my site is easy. Plus, I just added new artwork to post on your page. You'll find instructions and the artwork here. Thank you for your support!
A LITTLE ABOUT ME:
Did you know that I host two national radio shows? I have a Digital Minute that airs Monday through Friday. I also host a three-hour show on the weekends. Over 460 radio stations in the great United States broadcast my shows. Plus, from here in the desert come all kinds of tidbits about living a digital lifestyle. You can read my weekly column in over 100 Gannett newspapers across the country. And I write two columns a week for the USAToday Web site.
HAVE A QUESTION? CALL ME THIS WEEKEND!
If you have a question about something digital, let me help! It takes just three easy steps: 1.) Call the LIVE broadcast. That's this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the East Coast, or, if you live on the West Coast, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. 2.) Know the phone number. It is, of course, toll-free 1-888-825-5254. 3.) Talk to me. That's all there is to it!
STILL TO COME IN THIS ISSUE:
• Some freebies and a contest for you to win!
• MobileMe helps recover lost, stolen iPhones
• And so much more you can use!

Karen wrote from Grand Forks, ND, where she listens on KNOX 1310 AM. She uses Microsoft Works for word processing. She'd like to share documents with a friend who uses Word. So, she needs some help converting the documents to Word format.
You may be able to send the files as they are, Karen. Word may be able to open them without conversion. Or, the recipient may need to install a converter. I have a link to Microsoft's free converters on my site.
I'm hedging because Word only opens certain Works documents natively. So, I'd convert the files before sending them. Otherwise, the recipient may have trouble with them.
Saving a Works file in Word format isn't difficult. First, open one of the documents in Works. Then, click File>>Save As.
Navigate to the save location and enter a name for your file. Next, click the Save as type box. In Works 7.0 and earlier, select Word 97-2000 & 6.0/95 (*.doc). In later versions, select Word 97-2003 (*.doc). Click Save. You can now share the file with your friend.
You could also use Zamzar. It's a free online file converter. It converts to and from a variety of formats. It will convert multiple files at once. This is one site you'll want to bookmark!
Now, perhaps people e-mail you Word files occasionally. You can use Zamzar to convert them. Or, you can download OpenOffice. This is a free alternative to Microsoft Word. And, it will open and save Word files. Download it from my site now!

SAY HELLO TO ALL IN SAGINAW, MI
Steveland Judkins was born in Saginaw in 1950. You probably know him better as Stevie Wonder. The name Saginaw means "where the Sauk were." It's located in the Tri-Cities area of Saginaw-Midland-Bay City.

Brought to you by my book, Complete Guide to Computer Security & Privacy. Order your copy today!
TROJAN CALLS HOME VIA INSTANT MESSAGING
A security firm is warning that the Zeus Trojan now has an instant messaging component. The Trojan detects and records log-in information. It then sends an instant message to the hacker behind the attack.
Why is this newsworthy? Well, it allows the hacker to act faster. There's a greater chance that the information will still be good. For example, it could allow the attacker to use one-time passwords.
Zeus isn't the first program to use instant messaging. Last year's Sinowal was the groundbreaker. Protect yourself! Head over to my Security Center to get the software you need. It's free! Then, use a program like SiteAdvisor to warn you of malicious sites.
THE END IS IN SIGHT, BUT I WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK

I bought my daughter an iPhone for college. I'm worried that the phone will be lost or stolen. I heard it has a tracking feature. How can she enable this? John in Houston, listening on KPRC 950 AM
iPhones are expensive. Besides, they can hold a lot of sensitive information. A thief could access your daughter's e-mail.
Or, who knows what a thief would find stored in apps? It is a treasure trove of information.
Of course, thieves love iPhones. Apple has recognized the problem. So, it has introduced a way to track the iPhone.
Go to my site to read the rest this tip. It's free! And it's really pretty cool. Some thieves have been tracked down. Also, a picture there demonstrates what you will see on your iPhone. It's actually a photo of my studios in Phoenix!

A PAINTER MAKES A COSTLY MISTAKE
A man was laid off and did odd jobs to make ends meet. One day, he knocked on a woman's door and asked for work. She gave him a five-gallon bucket of paint and a brush. "Go around back of the house and paint the porch," she said. An hour later, he returned. The woman was amazed that he finished so quickly. She asked if he had done a good job. "Yep. But, lady, that's not a Porsche back there. That's a Mercedes."
Reminder: If you have a question about something digital, call me during the LIVE broadcast. It's Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the East Coast, toll-free 1-888-825-5254. You can find the station nearest you broadcasting my show by clicking here for our handy dandy map.
