PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM H1N1 FLU
Flu season is almost upon us. And this year, we have a new worry: H1N1, also known as swine flu. This new strain first emerged in April and caused a major panic. Thousands of deaths were attributed to the disease. Unfortunately, H1N1 is expected to make a resurgence this fall.
Swine flu affects different people in different ways. Unlike other strains, young, healthy adults are at risk. So, you'll do well to protect your family from this illness. On my site, you'll find a wealth of information on H1N1, including help avoiding it. Don't miss it! Oh, and if you subscribed to my Cool Site, you'd already have this information!
NO, I DO NOT ENDORSE PARETOLOGIC
This week, I received more complaints about ParetoLogic. The company makes antivirus software and programs like RegCure and DriverCure. Readers have had billing problems with the company. They've also had trouble getting the software to work as promised. They want to know how I could endorse such products.
Well, folks, I do not endorse ParetoLogic. Again, with emphasis: I have NEVER endorsed ParetoLogic. Rather, it uses my name without permission to promote its products. If you search Google for my name, you'll probably see ads for ParetoLogic. Ignore the ads and do not buy ParetoLogic's software.
This thing is quite common on the Internet. So, be skeptical of the advertisements you see. I endorse relatively few products. If you haven't heard me talk about a product, I probably don't endorse it. If you haven't encountered ads for a product on my site or shows, I don't endorse it.
AWESOME SOFTWARE FREE FOR THE TAKING
Are you tired of the high price of software? Are you worried about the risks of downloading free software from the Internet?
Then my Download of the Day is for you! Each day, I select one great program to share with you. Each is thoroughly tested. So, you know it will work as advertised—and there's no security risk!
Here are some of my favorite free downloads from the past week:
Saturday's Download of the Day—Not everyone wants to pay for wireless broadband. Luckily, there is almost certainly a free Wi-Fi hotspot near you. They're easy to find.
Preview of Sunday's download—Stargazing is a great way to relax. Astronomy is more exciting than you'd think. These three tools make it more fun.
Want direct access to over 300 free programs? Bookmark my Downloads page. Just go here and press Ctrl+D. That will add my downloads to your browser's favorites!
And remember this: If I say a program is free, it's FREE. There are sites on the Internet that sell free programs. There are also many ads on the Internet for similar programs, which aren't free. If somebody tries to charge you for a free program, back up. You've clicked on the wrong thing.
SHARE WITH A FRIEND: Help keep your family and friends in the know. Forward this newsletter to them now. Or, if you prefer, invite them to join us. In fact, we have a special place set up to do just that. Click now and share the power of knowledge.
FAVORITE IPHONE APP OF THE WEEK
BigOven's site features more than 160,000 recipes, along with photos. Now, take all of the recipes with you on your iPhone. This free app gives you instant access to the recipes on the site.
To get started, enter a search term. Search by recipe name or ingredients. You'll see a list of results and, in many cases, corresponding photos. If you register with BigOven, you can add recipes to your favorites or your to-try list. It's a great way to put some variety back into your meals.
CHECK OUT MY FUN VIDEOS There are some great videos on the Internet. Unfortunately, you'll have to sift through some pretty awful videos to find them. That is, unless you visit my Video of the Day site! You won't find any offensive or boring videos here. There's just good clean family fun.
Here are my favorite videos from the past week:
• Creating a business isn't easy. How about creating 300 of them? Meet one of the richest men in the world.
• Sometimes I think extension cords are alive. No matter what, they end up in knots. But I may have the ideal solution.
• Hurricanes slam into the United States every year. These monsters are scary. But they have surprisingly humble starts.
• Completing a 5K race is tough for the young. But what about doing one at 95? This track star set a world record.
Some of the world's greatest inventions came from everyday people. Some are seriously useful. Others are just for fun. These are my favorite videos on invention. See more in my Video of the Day archive:
• Hobbyists and tinkerers toil away in basement workshops. Their creations can be surprisingly sophisticated. Here's one.
• So, you fire up your Terrafugia Transition. You fly to an airport. From there, you drive to the office. Think not? Watch this.
• Rube Goldberg machines are just plain cool. They do the simplest tasks in the most circuitous ways. This one is awesome!
• It's important for a man to be handy around the house. But can that talent go too far? Yes, it can. And here is the proof.
Saturday's video—Success doesn't always come easy. One family had the hardest of beginnings. But they stuck together. With education, they all succeeded.
Preview of Sunday's video—Talent shows are all the rage these days. Most of the acts are just bizarre. But every once in awhile, a real gem shows up. This is one of those times.
BE A PAL! SHARE MY VIDEO PICKS WITH YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS
On the lower left of the Video of the Day screen, there is a button. In fact, here's what the button looks like.
Click this button and you can share the video with family members, friends, coworkers and more.
PRIVACY AND SECURITY TIP: Texting while driving
I love text messaging. But it is deadly behind the wheel. In fact, recent studies show the dangers of texting are off the charts. I'll explain more in the second hour of my show.
Listen about halfway into the second hour of my national radio show for all that you need to know.
Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably a station near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.
STILL TO COME: Useful tips, important news and a few laughs!
• What's up with USB 3.0?
• Connecting securely from a hotspot
• Facebook Groups vs. Facebook Pages
• Important security tips; and some awesome freebies! Back to the top

ARE USB 3.0 AND USB WIRELESS THE SAME?
David in Miami catches the show via podcast. He has a question about USB. In particular, he's heard talk of USB 3.0, or USB Super Speed. He asked if USB 3.0, or Super Speed, is wireless USB.
USB 3.0 is the latest iteration of the USB standard, David. It is not wireless; USB 3.0 is cabled, like earlier versions. And it is rated at 4.8 gigabits per second. That's 10 times the speed of USB 2.0.
Its success is pretty much guaranteed. The USB standard is entrenched. Users love its convenience. And manufacturers show no signs of abandoning it. Want all the particulars about USB 3.0? I have them in my must-read tip.
Wireless USB has been around for a few years. Basically, you connect your USB gadget to a wireless USB hub. You attach a dongle to your laptop or computer. You can then access the gadgets from a range of roughly 100 feet.
Wireless USB is expensive, and hasn't taken off. A 4-port wireless USB hub and adapter runs more than $100. Also, a dongle sticking out of your laptop is inconvenient. Learn the advantages and drawbacks of Wireless USB in my handy tip.
There's another high-speed connection that you'll see on some computers. It's called eSATA. To learn how to get eSATA on your machine, check my tip!
CHOOSING AN MP3 PLAYER FOR MY PODCASTS
Thomas wrote from McAllen, TX, where he tunes in on KURV 710 AM. He's thinking about joining Kim's Club. That way, he'll get my shows on demand. He'll also get premium content only available to members. But he has a question. He wants to know how large my podcasts are. The answer will help him choose an MP3 player.
First off, Thomas, you don't need an MP3 player to listen to my shows on demand. You can listen directly from your computer. Or, you can burn the podcasts to CD. But an MP3 player will give you more freedom. And you'll be able to listen to other podcasts and music.
Fortunately, my podcast files aren't terribly large. The weekend show is about 40 megabytes. The daily Minutes are just shy of 400 kilobytes. So, you won't need an MP3 player with a lot of storage. Even a small player will hold a lot of my podcasts.
I'd get a player with at least 4GB of storage. This shouldn't set you back too much. Apple, Creative and Microsoft sell 4GB players for $100 or less. You'll find other 4GB players that come in under $100, too.
Of course, you may have a large CD collection. Or, maybe you're interested in purchasing MP3s. In that case, you may want more storage. Manufacturers often tell you how many songs a player will hold. Your results will vary. But pay attention to this number when selecting a player. It will help you make a wise choice.
For more help choosing an MP3 player, check these great tips on my site:
USE YOUR ELECTRICAL WIRING TO DELIVER WEB ACCESS
Ron in Colorado Springs, CO, catches the show on KRDO 1240 AM. He needs to improve his Wi-Fi reception around his house. He heard me mention using your house's electrical wiring to deliver Internet access. He would like to know more about it.
This is called powerline networking, Ron. You connect an adapter to your router. You connect another router to your computer. Both plug in to power outlets in your home. Voila! Your computers are networked.
Now, powerline networking isn't necessarily the best solution for you. First, all of the outlets must be on the same electrical system. That could be a problem in some homes. Also, if your wiring is in poor condition, the connection will likely be poor.
But powerline networking will be the ideal solution for some people. If you go with it, you'll need an adapter to connect to your router. Each computer also needs an adapter. This can get pricey. Expect to pay about $150 for a starter kit. Get wireless adapters for your computers, if possible. You can connect a laptop without a cable. Other PCs can also share the connection.
Networking is one of the trickier aspects of computing. But these tips will help you set up a network without all the fuss:

TEXT MESSAGING ISN'T JUST FOR 'LOLZ' ANYMORE
Text messaging is popular with teens and adults alike. It's an easy way to send quick notes to others. But you can do so much more.
Many Web sites offer tools for text messaging. You can also control gadgets via text messaging. You can even shop by texting! And there are other cool uses.
For instance, security cameras from Linksys and D-Link can send text alerts. When motion is detected, you're notified.
There's also the Proliphix thermostat. It can report to you via text messaging. For example, receive an alert when a high temperature is reached.
Do you find test messaging interesting? You'll want to read my entire weekly column, on my site. It's free!
Do you have a Web site or blog? If you do, help support The Kim Komando Show! Linking to my site is easy. Plus, I just added new artwork to post on your page. You'll find instructions and the artwork here. Thank you for your support!

HAVE A QUESTION? CALL ME THIS WEEKEND!
If you have a question about something digital, let me help! It takes just three easy steps: 1.) Call the LIVE broadcast. That's this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the East Coast, or, if you live on the West Coast, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. 2.) Know the phone number. It is, of course, toll-free 1-888-825-5254. 3.) Back to the top

Roger wrote from Honolulu, where he tunes in on KHVH 830 AM. He has a question about Wi-Fi hotspots.
He read my recent tip on using hotspots. In it, I say that you should be safe visiting HTTPS pages at public hotspots. However, he's heard my warnings about keystroke loggers.
This trips up a lot of people, Roger. So, let me explain. An HTTPS page uses SSL encryption to exchange data between your computer and the site. Learn how SSL works by reading my informative tip.
Since the connection is encrypted, the data traffic is unreadable. If it's intercepted, it won't make any sense.
If you visit an SSL site, it doesn't matter where you connect. You're just as safe at a coffee shop as you are at home. Nobody there can see the data that is exchanged.
But thieves don't need to intercept traffic to steal data. As you point out, keylogging software could be installed on your machine. This software will record what you type. It can also take screenshots. It could steal the data before it is encrypted and transmitted.
You also need to worry about the site to which you're connecting. Malware on your computer could misdirect you to a criminal site. Any site, including those run by criminals, can get an SSL certificate. Should malware misdirect you, your encrypted data could be read by criminals. That is as likely to happen at home as the coffee shop.
Encryption used with HTTPS is always safe. The location from which you're transmitting data is immaterial. But if malware is on your computer, the HTTPS method's safety is negated. Security software is critical. You'll find everything you need on my site—free!
You also need to think about security patches for third-party programs. These will help keep crooks from breaching your machine. My handy download will help you keep your programs updated.

THIS WEEK'S FOCUS: How to find free Wi-Fi
Not everyone wants to pay for wireless broadband. Luckily, there is almost certainly a free Wi-Fi hotspot near you. They're easy to find.
Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably a station near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.

• SECURE COMPUTING: WPA can be cracked in about a minute
Back to the top

Brought to you by my book, Complete Guide to Computer Security & Privacy. Order your copy today!
WPA CAN BE CRACKED IN ABOUT A MINUTE
Researchers in Japan say they can crack WPA encryption in about a minute. WPA encryption is used to secure wireless networks. It was cracked last year by another group of researchers. However, the previous crack took about 15 minutes. And it affected a narrower range of networking gear.
Folks, I warned you last year about WPA encryption. If you're using WPA, switch to WPA2. Check your router to see if it supports WPA2. If not, the manufacturer may have a firmware update. Otherwise, invest in a new router. For help securing your wireless network, check my step-by-step instructions.
THE END IS IN SIGHT, BUT I WILL BE BACK NEXT WEEK
• Facebook Pages vs. Facebook Groups

Our family established a walk team several years ago. We raise money for diabetes research. These days, that's difficult. So, I created a Group on Facebook. I have to log in to get to the Group. I want to put a link to the Group on the walk team's Web site. I don't want visitors to have to enter a password for the Group. Also, will you look at our site? I'd like some input. Chuck in San Antonio, TX, listening on WOAI 1200 AM
You certainly can use Facebook to help raise donations. It is also a great way to update others.
Setting up a Facebook Group may seem ideal. But I recommend that you create a Facebook Page instead.
Facebook Pages are specifically designed for businesses and organizations. They are similar to profiles for individuals.
When you create a Page, it is not tied to your Facebook account. In comparison, Groups are tied to your individual account. Certain Facebook features work better with a Page.
More important, only Facebook members can see Groups. But a Page can be visible to the entire Internet. Visitors must still log in to leave comments.
Place a link to the Page on your Web site. Also, include a link in your e-mail signature. This is a great way to raise awareness. Your friends and family can become fans of your walking group. It will appear in their Facebook profiles.
I have a handy download that will help you add a signature to your e-mail. Don't miss it!
To get started with Facebook Pages, click this link. It will help you create the Page for your team. Pay close attention to the privacy settings. You'll want to leave the page open to the public. Privacy settings for Pages should work the same as for individual profiles. My must-read column will help you with your Facebook privacy settings.
Finally, be careful about what you post on the Page. You don't want to post your address or personal e-mail address. You should also limit the information you post on your son. You don't want a predator to use it to track him down. Nor do you want to post information that an identity thief can use.
Now, let's talk about your Web site. I was struck by one thing: Donations are hard to make. That link is hard to find. I'm sure many people miss it.
I'd place a big link on the main page, clearly labeled. It should take visitors to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) site. Include another link to your current donation page that lists other ways to donate.
You should receive more donations by making it easier for visitors. I'd also post more photos of your son. And include photos from previous walks. This will help put a face to the illness.
NEW LINKS ALWAYS DESIRED
We have new linking artwork for your blog, online profile, Web site and wherever else you'd like to post it. Help us tell the world to go Komando. Just paste the code on the appropriate page within your site. It's that simple!

UGH! THIS ONE IS JUST AWFUL!
Susie knew she had hit the jackpot when she found a four-leaf clover. Everything went right for her. She found a great boyfriend. She got a great job. And it hardly ever rained. Then one day, she left the clover in clothes that went to the dry cleaner. It was still there when she retrieved the clothes. But it had been flattened. Her luck immediately turned rotten. She lost her boyfriend and the job. And she was caught in one storm after another. Finally, she complained to her dad. "It's like I always tell you," he said. "Never press your luck!"
