LENOVO RECALLS THINKPAD BATTERIES
Lenovo has issued a battery recall. Fortunately, the batteries are not being recalled due to safety concerns. Rather, they are faulty and don't work correctly. Users may receive messages such as "Battery cannot be charged."

The recall affects batteries in six ThinkPad models. Lenovo has a diagnostic tool on its site. If you own a ThinkPad, visit Lenovo's site. If your battery is defective, Lenovo will issue a replacement battery.

MICROSOFT TO GIVE FREE TRAINING
These days, computer skills are essential for landing a good job. So, if you're looking for work, it is important to have computer training under your belt. And what better way is there to get that training than from Microsoft?

Microsoft is teaming up with states to help job seekers boost their computer skills. Elevate America is a program that grants free vouchers for computer training. The training is for computer newbies and intermediate users. It will even help professionals improve their career prospects with Microsoft certifications.

To get a voucher for the program, you'll need to contact your state employment agency. But you can learn more about the program at the Elevate America site. There are even free and low-cost educational tools for everyone!

CAN YOUR SMARTPHONE DO THIS?
These days, smartphones are very impressive. They're much like small computers. And downloadable apps give them seemingly endless possibilities. But, Andrei Melnikov's smartphone has a feature yours doesn't. It can turn on Melnikov's stove.

When Melnikov's phone is near his stove, incoming calls light the stove. Maytag says it doesn't know why the stove is doing this. But, Melnikov isn't taking any chances: He unplugs the stove when it's not in use. After seeing a video of the phone lighting the stove, I can understand why!

MY COOL FREEBIES MAKE YOUR COMPUTER MORE FUN
Who said there's no such thing as free? I prove them wrong every day with my Download of the Day! I choose one great program to feature on my site. It could be an advanced photo editor. Or, it could be a small utility that makes computing easier. You're sure to love it!

Here are some of my favorite free downloads from the past week:

• Running a Web site? Then, you need to track your visitors. This program gives you information and statistics.
• Surfing isn't a solitary activity. You can share your favorite sites with others. This program makes it easy.
• You probably have a favorite image-editing program. But why not try something new? These tools are cool.
• PDFs are great. They can be easily accessed by anyone. But editing them is a pain. This tool will help.

Saturday's Download of the Day—Your homepage is the first site you visit every day. Then you move on. But what if your homepage had everything you needed? These services make it possible.

Preview of Sunday's download—Elephants never forget. But humans sure do. We could all use a helpful reminder from time to time.

Want direct access to over 300 free programs? Bookmark my Downloads page. Just go here and press Ctrl+D. That will add my downloads to your browser's favorites!

And remember this: If I say a program is free, it's FREE. There are sites on the Internet that sell free programs. There are also many ads on the Internet for similar programs, which aren't free. If somebody tries to charge you for a free program, back up. You've clicked on the wrong thing.

SHARE WITH A FRIEND: Help keep your family and friends in the know. Forward this newsletter to them now. Or, if you prefer, invite them to join us. In fact, we have a special place set up to do just that. Click now and share the power of knowledge.

TAKE A QUICK VIDEO BREAK
I see many videos each day in my Web travels. But, only a few are good enough to make the cut. Each day, I choose I select video to feature as my Video of the Day. It could have you "ROTFL," or, it could bring a tear to your eye. Either way, you won't want to miss it!

Here are my favorite videos from the past week:

• All work and no play stinks. But what about no work at all? Well, you'd be a slacker. But you'd be in good company.
• The wilderness is exciting. But some places are called wild for a reason. This ocean kayaker found that out first hand.
• Putting animals on live television is always risky. Things can get out of hand in a hurry. This video is a perfect example.
• The banjo has a unique sound. And it is tough to master. This man has done it. He has the quickest fingers in the world.

Most of the time commercials are just an annoyance. But some are actually creative. Others are barely recognizable as commercials. These are pretty cool. See more in my Video of the Day archive:

• Most of us ignore commercials. TiVo users just skip them. That's because they're boring. But this one breaks the mold.
• Olympus debuted its compact Pen camera 50 years ago. Now, it's reviving the line. This video celebrates its history.
• Companies have long used stunts to advertise products. So, here's one that's fun. It features human dominoes.
•  How does one create the craziest waterslide? Bruno shows us. But remember, things are not always as they seem.

videoSaturday's video—Would you risk your life for the secrets of nature's most terrifying killer? Today's gripping video gives you an up close look at a supertwister. Its winds exceed 200 miles per hour.

Preview of Sunday's video—Creating a business isn't easy. How about creating 300 of them? Meet one of the richest men in the world. His philosophy on life and business is fascinating.

BE A PAL! SHARE MY VIDEO PICKS WITH YOUR FAMILY & FRIENDS
On the lower left of the Video of the Day screen, there is a button. In fact, here's what the button looks like.

Click this button and you can share the video with family members, friends, coworkers and more.

PRIVACY AND SECURITY TIP: How secure are your calls?
Can your home phone really be tapped? What about cell phones or VoIP calls? All of these are vulnerable to eavesdropping. But how does it work? And should you worry about it? Tune into the second hour of my show for answers.

Listen about halfway into the second hour of my national radio show for all that you need to know.

Need to find a radio station near you? No problem! Click here to use the official Kim Komando Show Locator Map. With over 450 stations, there's probably a station near you. But if there isn't, you can always download the shows with a Kim's Club membership. It's only $5.95 per month.

STILL TO COME: Useful tips, important news and a few laughs!

• Stop Facebook from accessing your e-mail account
• How do playlists work?
• Connect your guitar to a PC for recording

DIGITAL DIGRESSIONS: Tips that work for you!

CLEANING UP FORWARDED E-MAIL MESSAGES
Bob wrote from Tallahassee, FL, where he tunes in on WFLA 100.7. The odd formatting symbols added to forwarded e-mail annoy him. He wants a program that removes them. He uses a Mac.

I hear you, Bob! Often, strange formatting gets added to forwarded e-mail messages. The formatting marks indicate that a message has been forwarded. They can also show that you're quoting an e-mail message. But they quickly get out of control. That's particularly true if a message is forwarded several times.

You didn't say what e-mail program you're using. But it should give you options for forwarding e-mail messages. Poke around for them. You should have the option of not adding any additional formatting when forwarding a message. This will go a long way to solve the problem when you're forwarding messages.

When you're forwarding a previously forwarded message, things are more difficult. But you will find programs that will clean up for you. Look at SmartWrap ($18) and TextSoap ($40). I was unable to find a free program. However, Windows users should try this great free e-mail cleaner.

If you don't want to pay, there is another solution. It will take a little more work, however. You can use search and replace. Do a search for one of the extraneous characters. However, you will want to leave the replace box empty. The program will find the marks and replace them with nothing. It's a fast way to delete a character or word. Repeat this for the other extraneous characters.

Now, you could be using Webmail. In that case, things are even more complicated. You'll need to copy the e-mail body into a word processing program. Do a search and replace for the extraneous characters. Then, paste the message back into the e-mail window.

Need more help with your e-mail? Don't miss these great tips on my site:

KEEPING FACEBOOK OUT OF YOUR E-MAIL ACCOUNT
Ron wrote from Rome, GA, where he listens via Kim's Club. He gave Facebook access to his e-mail account to find friends. Now, he wants to cut Facebook's access to his e-mail. It is using the account to suggest friends.

Let me explain the situation, Ron. I'm sure others are scratching their heads. When you register with Facebook, you can let it scour your e-mail account for addresses. People at these addresses can be invited to be your friends. Facebook refers to this as Friend Finder.

Facebook does not keep your password after it imports your information, Ron. So, you don't need to worry about severing the connection.

So, you want to delete this information from Facebook. Easy enough! Just log in to Facebook and click Friends and select Find Friends. Look for the Find People You Email section. Click Learn More at the bottom of it. A box will open. You'll see a link to delete the data from Facebook. Click it. On the next page, click Remove.

You will probably still see friend suggestions in Facebook. However, these should be based on other criteria. For example, a suggested friend may have uploaded an address book with your e-mail address in it. Or, they could be friends of friends.

Now, I'm not keen on giving sites access to my e-mail account. After all, some sites have been known to abuse the privilege. But if you let sites access your account, change your password to something simple. After the service is done, change the password back. You won't have to worry about the site accessing your account later.

Don't expect anything you post to Facebook to be 100 percent private. But I have some tips to help you manage your Facebook privacy better. And, if your kids are on Facebook, make sure they have safe profiles.

WORKING WITH SOFTWARE UPDATES IN MAC OS X
Jessie in Indianapolis catches the show on WIBC 93.1 FM. Jessie bought an iMac, switching from Windows. He wants to know if updates are installed automatically, as in Windows.

By default, Mac OS X checks for updates automatically. However, the updates are not downloaded automatically. A box will pop up prompting you to select the updates to install.

To install the updates, you simply select the ones you would like to install. After you click the button to install them, you must enter your password and agree to the terms. You may also need to reboot. So, it requires more intervention than Windows Update.

Now, you can change the way your Mac handles updates. Click the Apple menu and select System Preferences. Double-click Software Update. In the window that opens, you can cancel automatic checks for updates. You can also specify the frequency of checks.

Additionally, you can have your computer download important updates automatically. You'll be notified when they're ready to install. This will save you a little time. You can also manually check for updates from the Software Update options.

I hope you've protected your Mac. Despite common perceptions, Macs are not impervious to attack. My must-read tip will help you lock down your Mac.

Then, have some fun with your new computer! I have plenty of helpful and fun Mac programs at my Download site. Check out these gems:

THE WEEKLY COLUMN:

CELL PHONE TRACKING GIVES YOU PEACE OF MIND
Did your kids make it to school OK? Is your spouse late because of traffic, or was there an accident? These kinds of worries can plague you. But new tracking tools can put your mind at ease.

There are plenty of GPS gadgets that will help you track your family. But using a cell phone is your best bet. You won't need to invest in a new gadget. And these days, nobody goes anywhere without their phone.

Most major cellular providers offer tracking services. Verizon offers Chaperone. AT&T's service is called FamilyMap, while Sprint's is Family Locator.

You'll pay a small monthly fee for the privilege. This is usually between $5 and $10 per phone tracked.

Click here to read my entire weekly column on my site. It's free!

ROOKIE RUNDOWN: Tips to get you newbies up and going!

Megan wrote from Las Vegas, where she tunes in on KDWN 720 AM. She has a question about playlists and her iPhone. She wants to know if a song is duplicated when it is added to multiple playlists. She's worried about exhausting storage space.

A playlist is simply a list of songs that you have grouped together in order. It tells your iPhone which songs to play in what order.

When you create a playlist, the music is not duplicated. There will still be only a single copy of the songs on your phone.

Playlists are a great way to listen to music. You can create them on your computer and transfer them to your iPhone.

You can also create them directly on your iPhone. To do this, open the music player on your iPhone. Next, open the Playlists section. You'll see the Playlists icon in the bottom left of the screen.

Open "On-The-Go." Now, use the buttons at the bottom of the screen. You can add songs and videos to the playlist by tapping them.

You can also add whole lists of songs to your playlist. For example, you may want to add an album or all of an artist's songs. Just tap Add All Songs at the top of the list. Tap Done when you're finished.

When you synchronize your iPhone, your play list will be saved on your computer and the iPhone.

You can also edit the playlist at any time. Just open the playlist and click the Edit button. The list of songs will change appearance.

Click the red button and click Delete to remove a song from the playlist. This does not remove the song from your iPod.

You can also change the order of the songs. Click the lines to the right of the song. Then, drag it up or down the list. To add a song, tap the "+" button in the top left corner and select your songs. When you're finished, tap Done. Clear the playlist by clicking Clear Playlist.

I get a lot of questions about iPods, iTunes and iPhones. If you have a question, hit my site. I may have answered it already. And here are some tips that can help you protect your music:

CRIMINALS TARGET SOCIAL-NETWORKING SITES
Criminals follow the crowd. So, it is no surprise that they're moving to social-networking sites like Twitter. The Web Hacking Incidents Database just released its latest report. Sure enough, social-networking sites were the most common target in the first half of 2009.

What can you do to stay safe on social-networking sites? First, keep your computer updated with Windows Update. Check your other programs for updates regularly. Use security software and a little common sense. Watch out for phishing attacks and shortened URLs. And, of course, read my privacy tip each week. It will keep you current on the latest threats!

KILLER TIP--THE WEEKLY QUESTION SENT IN FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU!

My computer runs Vista. How can I connect my guitar and record it on my computer?
Nick in Indianapolis, listening on WIBC 93.1 FM

There are several ways to connect a guitar. They'll give you varying degrees of quality.

The first solution is the most obvious. Run a cord from your guitar's output (if it has one) to your computer's line-in. Your sound card will likely accept 1/8-inch plugs. Your guitar probably uses a 1/4-inch plug. So, you'll probably need to buy an adapter along with the cord. Expect to pay about $10 total.

You will likely be very unhappy with this solution, though. You'll get a quiet, muddy recording. It certainly won't sound professional. The problem is that the sound coming from the guitar isn't amplified.

A better solution is to connect your guitar to your amplifier. Then, connect the amplifier to your computer. Use the line out jack on the amplifier.

Do NOT connect the speaker out to the sound card. You will likely blow out the sound card.

I recommend using the line out and line in connections when connecting anything to a computer. The volume level remains even. You don't have to worry about adjusting volume levels.

If you don't have an amplifier, buy a pre-amp. These are usually small boxes that sit between the computer and the guitar. They will amplify the signal and input it to the computer. Prices start around $50.

You'll find pre-amps that connect via an analog or digital connection. A digital connection will provide the best sound.

All of these methods require that your guitar have an output. If your guitar doesn't have an output, all is not lost. You just need a guitar microphone. You can then attach the microphone to your sound card. Make sure the microphone is amplified. Otherwise, the sound quality may be poor.

Now, you will need software to record the input. I recommend the amazing, free Audacity. Download it from my site now! You'll also want to check out my recent column. It will help you sell your music online!

Finally, in case you missed this great video, check it out now. As a guitar player, you should appreciate it. It involves an airline and a broken guitar. Enjoy!

SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU LAUGH

THIS ONE IS A REAL STINKER!
A small country in Africa relied on tourism for its livelihood. Tourists would come from all over the world for safaris. They paid high fees to hunt. But one day, the king of the country died, and his son assumed the throne. His first act was to outlaw hunting because of the brutality. Soon, the once wealthy country was broke. And wild animals began to overrun the villages. After a while, the people had had enough and overthrew the king. They legalized hunting again, and prosperity returned. It was also the first time that a reign was cancelled on account of the game.
