The past four days, early in a session, my computer shut down and then restarted itself. After the first time it is fine. About the same time the free memory free space jumped from 81.2gb to 100gb. Vista/Chrome
Thanks

First thing I would check is the power supply. Next is open the case, then take it outside and blow out the dust using canned air, and make sure you get the dust off ALL the fans, INCLUDING the power supply. Then hook it back up, turn it on, and VERIFY that ALL the fans are working before putting the side cover back on. It's also possible your RAM (memory) has become flaky. After doing the above cleaning, if it still reboots on it's own, make a note of your RAM sticks locations, and remove all but one and reboot (do this with the power OFF). if the single stick stops the reboots, turn the PC off and add back (one at a time) another stick, removing the good stick, Test each stick this way. If ALL still have the reboot problem, then I would focus on the power supply, assuming all the fans are working.

I cleaned the hard drive as recommended. It still shuts down in about 30 min. everytime. Then starts back up on the page where I was working. What do the RAM sticks look like?
The C memory jumped from 81.2GB to 100GB Jan. 19 and has gone down about .5GB per day since????
All security is up to date. I run CCleaner and am not adding new downloads.
Thanks. lambert

The free memory free space you list is from your hard drive. You are unlikely to have 100G RAM. |

This may be a Hibernate problem. Try turning hibernate off and see if things improve. Respectfully Submitted Xhi The Computer Whisperer Everyone is entitled to my opinion |

I turned "hibernate" off. Same problem. Once it shuts down and restarts I don't have that problem again the same day. A blue screen flashes up for a few seconds that says "Chrome memory is full or_ _ _ _ _." That is all I have time to read before shutdown
thanks

You can stop the automatic restart so you can see what the error is. Respectfully Submitted Xhi The Computer Whisperer Everyone is entitled to my opinion |

I turned off the auto restart. It still restarts. This morning I started up with IE9 and in 30 min. it restarted. About 12hrs. later I started with Chrome. Three hrs. later. No restart. Seems to be once every 24hrs. Any ideas?
thanks

Did you follow BillMsenior's instructions on cleaning. You say you 'cleaned the hard drive'. It sounds as though it could be a failing power supply. Clean it thoroughly with compressed air.
Disabling the auto restart will leave the BSOD in place so you get get the error information from it before restarting manually.
You might try starting the computer in Safe Mode, and let it set awhile. If it doesn't restart in Safe Mode, it could be a software problem. If it does restart, it would seem to be a hardware problem. I tend to think it's a RAM problem as Bill suggested. Here a shot of RAM:

This morning I turned my computer on and logged in. In 25 min. it restarted. I have the auto restart turned off.
If it was a power supply problem would it only do it once after 25 or 30 min.? I have been on over an hour after the daily restart.
Tomorrow I will start in the safe mode.
thanks

If it's rebooting out of the blue (not after you did any Microdope updates), then I'm betting it's the power supply. In that case, having the auto-restart turned off won't help, as this is the same as pulling the electric cord, then immediately plugging it back in, which has nothing to do with the software.

This morning I restarted it myself. It took about 10 min. to shut down and restart. It didn't restart on its own again.
Is there any way to check the power supply?
thanks

There are only a couple ways to check a power supply and neither is very practical for the normal user.
One replace with a known good power supply. If the problem goes away then buy a new PS. I have several hanging around, you probably do not.
Two, a power supply tester. Not on hand by the normal user. Respectfully Submitted Xhi The Computer Whisperer Everyone is entitled to my opinion |

Agree will BillM, when I bought mine 2-3 years ago, it was $19.99 - now $14.99. Why is this not happening with gas??????
