How can I tell if the history on the hard drive is cleared? Also, when I go to control panel; internet options; browsing history; view files how do I know what I am looking at? There is one particular icon named ie9cvlist that when I open lists lots of domains, are these websites that someone has been to? I'm finding some really strange ones on our computer, are porn sites typically "camoflauged"? Thanks in advance, Concerned momma |

No, porn sites are not camouflaged, per se, if you mean hidden. The names of the sites may not be apparent to the untrained eye, however. This is one of the reasons the regulatory bodies added .xxx to the list of suffixes.
The entry "iepcvlist" may mean a comma separated value list that is opened using IE9. This is usually a list like contact addresses from an email account database. The CV list is generated when someone wishes to save or transfer their contacts.
Yes, the lists of sites in the History folder are sites that a user on that computer has visited. when you open Internet Explore (IE) or any other internet browser you can also see the history by typing "Crtl+H" simultaneously without the quotation marks.
If you are using Windopes (Windows) 7 you can use the Parental Controls to help monitor a person's computer usage. Open Control Panel>Parental Controls & click on "How can I use parental controls?" for more information.
Some options for filtering websites are available either within the browsers (easily circumvented) or by using third party software. I've not used any filtering on my computers so I've no knowledge on how well they work. |

IE9cvlist is explained here Understanding the Compatibility View List.
That being said I do not believe there is a good way of insuring that every last bit of history is wiped short of doing a complete drive wipe at Government standards, then re-installing which almost certainly will create some history almost immediately.
I guess you choose methods depending on whether or not you want to keep your history from wife/husband/parents or the local police or the Feds and how much time and effort you have available for the job.
Personally, I simply do not allow anyone to use my computer who wants to know/criticize where I've been. Respectfully Submitted Xhi The Computer Whisperer Everyone is entitled to my opinion |

Thanks for the replies. I followed the link for understanding ie9cvlist, but I'm afraid it's like reading Greek. I guess what I need to know, since the ie9cvlist looks very different from anything I've seen before, is what am I looking at? There are lots of > < and words like "domain",etc. Then something like, "bleacherreport.com". Some apparent addresses are strange, and when I type them into google they come up as some foreign sight that I obviously can't read. We have had teenage nephew visitors, and I want to know if something I don't approve of has been done on my computer. Thanks! |

What do you mean .xxx? Can you give me an example? Thanks! |

.xxx is a domain suffix supposed to be used by pron sites like .com, .net, .us, etc. Whether they actually do or not I would not know since I don't visit porn sites. Ex: www.goodporn.xxx

| Just for clarification the TLD(top level domain) .xxx is not in use yet. It has been discussed but ICANN(the governing body that decides on domain names) has not released .xxx for use yest. |

| ccleaner (google it) now has the Gutman technique of cleaning your harddrive so that your history is truely cleaned. Even when you erase all history via browser and delete those naughty pictures they retain a magnetic image on your hard drive that can be recovered by someone who knows what they are doing. So if you find yourself a "Drive Scrubber" it scrubs up the magnetic images over and over in different patterns making them impossible to recover. I believe ccleaner is made by piriform and it is free for download. |
