Need some help with 2 different friend's pcs---both are HPs about 5 or 6 years old running XP home, with 1 g ram. Both are up to date with windows and HP software, no driver issues on device manager.

Both are slow at bootup, though they have no more processes than 6 months ago. However, when Windows has loaded enough where I can look at task manager, the page file is up around 2.5 g!! After a half hour or so, the ram usage drops back down to 600mb and they run fine. Is this possibly a hardware issue? Maybe HD?? There have been no smart alerts that I am aware of.

Thanks for any help.

I swear I am not running a business on the side, I make nothing for this...but I do learn a lot!!

Go to the Task manager when this is happening and see if you can determine what programs are running causing this problem. Then tell us what they are. You can do this in the processes tab. Sort so the CPU numbers are at the top. If there are some starting with avg... particularly avgnsx. I would recommend installing the latest AVG 9 and not including either of the Plugins for Internet surveillance.

Thank you Xhi for responding!

Ok, I am looking at just one of the two hp's for now.

I uninstalled avg link scanner and then restarted. Pagefile went to almost 2.5 g and then over 10 mnutes or so, it went back down to 557mb. I looked at processes during this time....first was always idle processes(75 to 90%), then logmein, after that, it pretty much rotated for a bit, msmpeng.exe and masacui.exe (both windows defender processes),two antivirus (avira) processes (avguard and avgnt), winpatrol, all used 4 to 8 and then dropped off. When it was loaded..its normal state had system idol at 90 to 95, logmein at 2 to 4, then task mgr and then a few things briefly and that is it.

So you think it is software?

I guess I can use msconfig and turn those off and see how it does on reboot. Failing that, I guess what, be there physically and use msconfig, turn off all non microsoft processes and see how it does on reboot?? Then gradually add back in???

IF so, is there anything else I can do long distance??

Thanks a bunch Xhi

I hope they don't have both AVG and Avira installed. Two anti-virus scanners loaded can cause all sorts of problems.

Hi cw---no, each pc has only one antivirus installed and only one active antispyware app. One has avira, the other has avast. Both have Defender. I did have avg's link scanner installed on one of the pcs but had not had any problems till recently. After uninstall, there is still an issue.

I can stop defender and see what happpens.

Other things which will slow a computer down are:
  • When free space on the hard drive falls below 20%
  • When virtual memory settings are not right. Sometimes because of the above reason.
  • An early sign of power supply failure is an increase in error rate. Power supplies MTBF is normally at least about 5 years, but so is the MTBF for hard disks.

cwsnyder2---thank you for the suggestions.....I'll go have a look at the virtual memory settings, I usually set to let windows decide, but I need to check that out...and the hd free space and the power supply, I had a devil of a time trying to figure that one out last winter on my pc. Again, thanks for the ideas.
