I get this blue screen - A problem has been detected and Windows is shutting down to prevent further damage. It says to check for new hardware or software installed properly. That is not the case since I haven't done either.
It also says: Collecting data for crash dump Initializing disk for crash dump Beginning dump of physical memory Dumping physical memory to disk:100
Should I be rushing to get a Geek to look at this? I've turned it off, turned it back on and everything seems fine.
The error is a driver error, specifically a user-mode one. What you need to do is isolate it, and that's not always easy to do. I generally start by booting to safe mode and running msconfig from the start/search line. On the general tab, place the system in diagnostic mode, click apply/ok and restart normally. If you can successfully login, then move to selective startup and slowly re-enable a few lines on the startup and services tabs at a time, rebooting in between until the failure reoccurs. Once it does, you know it has to be one of the ones that you most recently enabled. Believe it or not, the most frequent cause of these types of errors are antivirus programs. It would be the first thing I tried restarting.
Silver Haired Tech - thank you for your reply. I think I'll take it in to a repair shop and have them look at it along with your advice. This is not something I want to tackle. From Dyed Red Grandma!
