| My laptop (14 months old) -- sudden death. The power will come on, but nothing else will happen. I took it to a local shop, and was told it was a bad mother board, and it would be better to get a whole new computer than to try to fix it. It was also said that it might be possible to get everything off the hard drive, but they didn't do that. Can anyone tell me if such is possible, and if so, how??? |

You can buy a USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE Adapter With Power Cable and remove the hard drive from the old laptop and access it via the USB dongle on the new laptop, which will enable you to rescue your data, settings, pictures, etc. Once you have everything off the old drive, you can then repartition/reformat it and use it as an external backup drive.

| Thanks! Excuse novice naivete, but you mean to physically remove the hard drive from the laptop? I am thinking I may go to a desktop rather than another laptop. Any thoughts? |

My previous post will work on both, and yes, remove the hard drive from the old laptop. If you're going to trash it anyway, it won't hurt for you to get some TECH experience by removing it yourself. It's a good learning experience for you.
