I live in the sticks with no cable, DSL and poor version coverage. I need to have internet and wonder which satellite service is best or are there boosters so I could use version for internet access? Your advice would be appreciated MoKokanee

Satellite Internet service is Great! ( If that is all that is available.) I had Internet service under those conditions several years ago and was quite satisfied except for the HughesNet Customer Service. Today I think there are two main ones Wild Blue and those based off Hughesnet. From what I have read Wildblue is best better.

I had Hughesnet for five years before switching to Wildblue which I've now had for three years. I also live in the sticks about ten miles south of nowhere. Hughesnet was a real pain with frequent service interruptions, horrible customer service and tech support and intermittent money gouging schemes and scams. They've had four different names since I signed up with them eight years ago, which probably was a recurring attempt to dodge their reputation. Wildblue has had far better service and support with far fewer interruptions and better prices without the misleading price quotes from Hughesnet aka Hughes aka Direcway aka DirecPC.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

I've been bad-mouthing Hughesnet for several years, and it's seemed like I was the Lone Ranger. Welcome aboard, TONTO!

MoKokanee,

We had HughesNet for about 3 years before DSL came into our area. If your only other option is dial-up, satellite is worth the trouble, but there are hassles involved, as the other responders mentioned. I agree with all. However, I never personally had trouble with tech support, and I had to call them many, many times. The problem is...they have to go through their "routine" before they actually get to your question.

The HugheNet system would go down from time to time, or they would do maintainence, but never send you notice that it was coming (think it used to be on Sunday mornings).

Interestingly, sometimes when you lost service, if you went into IE, cleared temp files, cookies, history, and rebooted, your service would come back. I always did that before calling tech support.

Wildblue sounds like a better option today, especially since they are associated with Dish Network.

The only association Wild Blue has with Dish is that Dish chose them instead of Hughesnet for a bundled service. Dish does not own or control Wild Blue.
