Snow is not one of our "biggies" here in Fort Worth.
I've lived here nearly all of my life and I can only remember one or two "pretty" snow events--and I've never seen an attractive snowman.
Usually the snowmen are covered with grass and leaves--and the snow looks as if someone has dropped a huge half-eaten snowcone on the area.
In 1978 we had an interesting snow event-pretty, but dangerous.
About six inches of snow--then a layer of ICE--then more snow.
Walking was interesting.
With each step you never knew how far your foot would go--on top of the ice-or through it!
We did have a heavy, blowing snow event a couple of weeks ago--The temperature was above freezing--the ground was warm--nothing was sticking.
But the windshield wipers had a hard time keeping the windshield clear when you were driving.
In 1976 I rode my GoldWing to a homecoming event at UNT in Denton, Texas. (40 Miles North.)
Six inches of snow while I was in the luncheon.
It wasn't even freezing so I got to leave on the bike for Fort Worth in a couple of hours.
I won't get started on my ICE experiences--they can strand you for days here--and ice can't be shoveled!
My best to everyone fighting heavy snow--And stay safe!

Yep. It is it. I bookmarked it for future reference as they are predicting more for Tuesday and Wednesday. I could use it on my dashboard.

Thanks XHI

Best Ice story I have is one involving one of my former neighbors. She was a struggling single mom. She had an older model cavalier that had a problem with the heat in her car. Several years ago, we had serious ice storm. It was a half inch thick and took a lot to get rid of. Also stayed in the low teens for several days.

Her nephew got married. When they returned home at one in the morning, she lifted the hood to disconnect a wire so her battery did not go dead. Her feet went out from under her and the hood of the car closed on her. Her brother, mother and other relatives stood on the sidewalk laughing so hard some of them fell too. I had a good chuckle out of it. Fortunately, she wasn't hurt, but it sure was funny to watch. This ice storm was particularly nasty. You could not walk without sliding, and driving was even more dangerous.

We still laugh about it today as her mom still lives across the street.

We had places here in MD that had 38 inches of snow. And the airport just opened limited service tonight. Only have one runway open.

Airport total according to the noaa website is 26.5 inches. And we are on track for the most snow of the season in recorded snow history.

Come on August when I head for Myrtle Beach. Oh I can't wait.

UGH! To add insult to injury, we are bracing for another 6 to 12 inches for tomorrow into Wednesday. They haven't finished the side streets yet.

I'd love to strangle Puxatawny Phil about now.

Well, from weather back to jokes.

Story of a Technologically Challenged Senior...

I ran a business with 1,800 employees, all without a Blackberry that played

music, took videos, pictures and communicated with Face book and Twitter.

But....

I signed up under duress for Twitter and Face book, so my seven kids, their

spouses, 13 grandkids and 2 great grand kids could communicate with me in

the modern way. I figured I could handle something as simple as Twitter with

only 140 characters of space..

That was before one of my grandkids hooked me up for Tweeter, Tweetree,

Twhirl, Twitterfon, Tweetie and Twittererific Tweetdeck, Twitpix and

something that sends every message to my cell phone and every other program

within the texting world.

My phone was beeping every three minutes with the details of everything

except the bowel movements of the entire next generation. I am not ready to

live like this. I keep my cell phone in the garage in my golf bag.

The kids bought me a GPS for my last birthday because they say I get lost

every now and then going over to the grocery store or library. I keep that

in a box under my tool bench with the Blue tooth [it's red] phone I am

supposed to use when I drive. I wore it once and was standing in line at

Barnes and Noble talking to my wife as everyone in the nearest 50 yards was

glaring at me. Seems I have to take my hearing aid out to use it and I got

a little loud.

I mean, the GPS looked pretty smart on my dash board, but the lady inside

was the most annoying, rudest person I had run into in a long time. Every 10

minutes, she would sarcastically say, "Re-calc-ul-ating" You would think

that she could be nicer. It was like she could barely tolerate me. She would

let go with a deep sigh and then tell me to make a U-turn at the next light.

Then when I would make a right turn instead, it was not good.

When I get really lost now, I call my wife and tell her the name of the

cross streets and while she is starting to develop the same tone as Gypsy,

the GSP lady, at least she loves me.

To be perfectly frank, I am still trying to learn how to use the cordless

phones in our house. We have had them for 4 years, but I still haven't

figured out how I can lose three phones all at once and have to run around

digging under chair cushions and checking bathrooms and the dirty laundry

baskets when the phone rings.

The world is just getting too complex for me. They even mess me up every

time I go to the grocery store. You would think they could settle on

something themselves, but this sudden "Paper or Plastic?" every time I check

out just knocks me for a loop.

I bought some of those cloth reusable bags to avoid looking confused but I

never remember to take them in with me.

Now I toss it back to them. When they ask me, "Paper or Plastic?" I just

say, "Doesn't matter to me. I am bi-sacksual." Then it's their turn to stare

at me with a blank look.

Good one Primrose.

To me a phone is a phone. If I want to get on the internet, I am usually near a computer and feel it is safer. And all that texting and tweeting on such a small device is a serious increase in carpal tunnel syndrome.

Loved the bi-sacksual line.

And the snow totals are now predicted for another 10 to 20 inches and a radio station called our local tv station to ask how are we coping. It seems like Buffalo has decided to cede from New York and move south to Maryland.

I will have my laptop with me at work as I may get snowed in there (24/7 production facility that never closes, even for Christmas). I am not getting cut off from my personal email. And I have access to Kim's site on the company computers. So will stay in touch.

Affair to Remember

A man walked into a cafe,
went to the bar and ordered a beer..

'Certainly, Sir, that'll be one cent.'

'One Cent?' the man exclaimed.

He glanced at the menu and asked:
'How much for a nice juicy steak
and a bottle of wine?'

'A nickel,' the barman replied.

'A nickel?' exclaimed the man.
'Where's the guy who owns this place?'

The bartender replied:
'Upstairs, with my wife.'

The man asked: 'What's he doing upstairs
with your wife?'

The bartender replied:
'The same thing I'm doing
to his business down here.'

Loved it Cindy Lou. Thanks for the chuckle.

CW: Just put a deposit on a brand new Jayco 22fb. Is that one of the ones you make? Met the pres and ceo at the rv show. We were laughing about the cargo capacity (who in their right mind would take a ton of stuff camping with them? Literally the cargo capacity is almost a ton.).

Now to sell the HiLo.

Pmom, Jayco is one of the 'friendly' competition, but hope you enjoy it. I work on the Gulfstream Coach towables.

As to why you would take 'a ton of stuff' on your camping trip, consider this:
  • Clothing. You will have to have sufficient clothing for all during the trip, even if you wash your clothes on the trip, you probably aren't going to want to wash every day, and you will need alternatives, depending on what weather changes may happen.
  • Food. One of the reasons to camp instead of doing the motel/hotel/lodge thingy is to allow you to enjoy cooking in a different environment, but you will still have to carry the food, at least for a day!
  • Speaking of eating: plates, flatware, drinking glasses, cooking utensils, pots, etc.
  • If you are travelling in unfamiliar territory, you may also want to pack tools in case of a breakdown.
An RV makes it convenient for you to keep all but perishables in the RV, so that you are not spending as much time packing/unpacking for your trip. I know my parents kept a complete set of cooking and eating utensils just for the RV, and may leave clothing used mostly on trips in their RV, as well as specialized tools, after Dad retired. All they had to do was load up on food, and they were on their way for a weekend, or a week.

Lord, May my words today be tender and sweet, for tomorrow I may have to eat them!

They figure that the average family takes approximately 800 to 1000lbs of stuff with them when they go camping. Weight is always a consideration. We decided on the 22FB, with a dry weight of approximately 4100lbs. Even at the 1000 lbs, that leaves us within ample room of the 6000lb gvwr recommended for my tow vehicle.

The pres of Jayco said some people actually are rock collecters. Thus they have room for about 1000 lbs of rock. We had looked at the gulfstreams but were not happy with the layouts of their lighter weight trailers. We weren't happy with the layout of the Passports either. The 22FB has a separate bedroom with a queen bed you can walk around. And it has all that we need - my criteria was towing weight, double door refrig, and it had to have an oven. Anything more than that was a plus. It also has a cd player/radio, with mp3/ipod input, places for two tv's (guess I need to buy another) outside shower, a/c ducted. And Rockwood Mini-lites were overpriced. I got a great deal on a retail value of over 17000, for less than 12,000 brand new because of the rv show. Passports were also much more expensive.

Let you know when I actually take possession.
