| All of that snow came as rain in Orlando, Friday. Then we had anywhere from tropical storm to hurricane force winds on Saturday morning. I know. I had to be out in it all day BOTH days! |

Renae, I'm so glad I found this link--thanks to you! While I do sweat real well--but not cold my main interest in this link is the photos of the abandoned houses. If Ohio didn't seem so cold I would like to own several of them. I will explore the photos more fully. Thank You! Diablo |

Got up this morning, After my wife, Made up the bed, (An old Navy habit), Walked over to the dresser looked in mirror, Smiled just to get it over with for the day, (Remember W.C. Fields' quote "Start every day off with a smile and get it over with.") Then I turned on the computer, Ate my oatmeal, Then checked my email.
Received the following which I thought, at first, was kind of comical, since I have bird feeders. But after reading all of it I'm glad I started the day off with a smile.
.......................................................................................................
Subject: Bird feeder An interesting parable I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food. But then the birds started building nests in the boards of the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the poop. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table ... everywhere! Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket. And others birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food. After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone.
I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.
Soon, the back yard was like it used to be ... quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal. Now let's see .... Our government gives out free food, subsidize housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen. Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools because over half the class doesn't speak English. Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to "press one" to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than "Old Glory" are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties. Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder. If you agree, pass it on. If not, continue cleaning up the poop!

WELLL Diablo let me tell you all about Ohio! This has definitely been the worst Winter in years. Last year on December 17th my snapdragons on my front walk were still blooming it was soooooo mild. Then in January we had some 50s/60s that made it very difficult to think that we even had a Winter. There are some wonderful homes here and as an Ohio dweller (I do NOT claim to be a "BUCKEYE") I would welcome you here anytime. Down where Picaniny lives is beautiful countryside. I wouldn't mind living over in the Amish countryside either. My only buggaboo about OH is that Lake Erie is not an ocean and the rolling hills are not the Appalachians, Rockies, Smokies, or White Mountains other states boast. H48 |

Diablo... Ohio does have some beautiful country. I am in southwestern Ohio. About an hours drive to Kentucky or Indiana. Before this last cold spell and snow that came up from the SOUTH, I had crocuses blooming, hyacinths and Daffodils up about 4 inches. Since we had about 16 inches of snow I don't know if they will bloom now

Thanks for the links Renae especially the one to Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight. I met Thornton James "Pookie" Hudson a couple of years ago and he was one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet.

Renae, Heroness, and Picaninny. I loved the 50's music no matter who first posted the link. Actually every song on the site also resides in my harddrive--with the exception of Oh Donna--Richie Valens, I believe. Being a packrat and never moving much I still have all my 45s and albums from about 1953 to sometime in the 80's Does anyone remember "Oh Julie"--by the (sic) Creshendos? Some of those old ones are hard to find. My family--both sides--came from Indiana to Texas but long enough ago it was in covered wagons. When I get off my duff I am going to do a little traveling and see parts of the USA I have never seen. I bought a 2008 Chrysler 300 just for this purpose--Normally I'm a pick-up truck kind of guy. The last time I was on a plane Kennedy was our President--flew to Philadelphia and New York. I have driven all over Texas and a bit of the Deep South. There really aren't a lot of 1800's houses in Texas. There are a few in Oklahoma. Don't forget, this part of the country still was pretty wild in 1900. Although not a really big fan of Joan Rivers I remember on her short-lived late night show she said if you want to know what the weather is doing stick your foot out the window. While I have never done that it is a good idea to open the door and look outside before you dress. This last week the temperature has been in the 20s and the 80s--and those temps don't necessarily relate to day or night. We don't have a lot of snow--6 to 9 inches in the last week--but the temperature never fell below freezing so it didn't last. We can have really nasty ice--sometimes you can't even see it but it is as slick as owl p--p. And impossible to drive on! We also sometimes have a monsoon season in the spring 8 to 10 inches of rain with 70-80MPH winds. And some years it doesn't rain at all--1953, 1954, 1955, 1956---Floods everywhere in 1949, 1957. I'm rambling so I will quit. But maybe I'll get to visit Ohio. Diablo |

A Smile For You
Smiling is infectious; you catch it like the flu, When someone smiled at me today, I started smiling too. I passed around the corner and someone saw my grin When he smiled I realized I'd passed it on to him. I thought about that smile then I realized its worth, A single smile, just like mine could travel round the earth. So, if you feel a smile begin, dont leave it undetected Lets start an epidemic quick, and get the world infected!
Everyone needs a smile.

Nickel Coke in a 6 ounce glass bottle from a vending machine, girls in poodle dresses & saddle shoes, Hopalong Cassidy, The Cisco Kid, Howdy Doody. . . . Davy Crockett coon skin caps, the Grand Opening of Disneyland, our first black & white television, '55 Chevys before they were classics, the Edsel. . .family chat, Sunday drives, vacations without electronics, cross country trips on U.S. highways (not interstates), homemade ice cream. . . Elvis, before he was "King". . . waiting for "your" ring on the party line. . .or, listening in when it wasn't "your" ring.
Guess my age is showing. Gotta hide now!
Seventy degrees on Wednesday! The first time in 2008 that high a temperature is in the forecast!
Start each day with a smile! It will confuse everyone! Uriah |
